What is the "noticable increase in gas mileage" since you used Ester oil?

My G37 just hit 3,750 miles and is due for oil change. I called the service department of my dealer. They quoted $44 for oil change using "standard oil" which is Mobil brand. I asked about Ester oil, then they said that it would be $131. For synthetic oil, the price is $90 something.

Are Ester or synthetic oil "recommended" or "required"? What are the benefits, or what will happen if I don't? Also, what will be the oil change interval if using Ester or synthetic? $130 is a lot if I need to change oil every 3-month/3750 miles.

RP does more harm than good. Plus, it doesn't provide any real significant protection compared to Mobil 1. If you want the good stuff, look to Redline or Amsoil - true synthetics.

It's recommended, not required. Some people claimed to get a ticking noise from the engine when they switched to a non-Ester. Dealer fix for that is usually putting in Ester oil. There's nothing in the manual that specifically states that ester is required, or that not using it will void your warranty. Personally, I've never encountered this problem. Most of my oil changes have been straight from the dealership, which uses some sort of bulk oil (Orangeline blend the last time I checked w/ Riverside Infiniti). I got my last oil change done at Brake Masters and I brought my own oil and filter (Pennzoil Platinum & M1 filter). No problems at all. My only debate is whether I should change it at 3750, or extend my OCI to about 7000. I probably should get a UOA done, but I'm a lazy bastard and trust some other UOA's I've seen with our car. I think it was Jon who said he got surprisingly good results w/ PP, so I'm just hopping on the bandwagon haha.

What "harm" does it do? I'm not one that pushes the change intervals. I shoot for 3750 and not more than 500 off of that by the time I get it done. This is my first run with RP (from M1) and will be getting UOA for it.
