I usually have my mirrors set so that i just barely see the end of my car....and i always look over my shoulder...its become second nature

Even though you technically don't have to turn over because a car in an adjacent lane should always be in view from either one of your mirrors or from looking to your left/right, I'd still worry about small cars or especially motorcycles. One time I was on the freeway and I thought there was nothing to my left, but when I turned my shoulder I saw a motorcycle. However, I later noticed my mirrors weren't adjusted as well as they should've been, but still, better safe than sorry.

Its how I learned to set my mirrors for driving from day one so anything else feels strange to me. Also works at night by indirectly focusing the light away from your eyes, so the benefits are twofold.

Thanks for the article! I have been using an antiquated method and have always adjusted until my car was just outside of being visible! In a parking lot right now waiting for the wife and just set my mirrors according to the SAE article. Wish me luck boys!
