Start-stop button the most dangerous new feature in cars

I picked up my new coupe about three weeks ago and one of the questions I asked was how to turn the motor off in an emergency situation like the one that killed the CHP officer and family in the Lexus. Of course my sales person did not have a clue but said he would talk to the factory rep. Last time i talked to him there was still no answer however a tech pushed the button while a car was in drive and the motor shut down. There were no volunteers to try the same procedure while the car was being driven. Toyota or Lexus you must hold button for three seconds. So does anyone know how to shut motor down on the coupe ? Slam the brakes on or put in neutral are options of course, but to shut down the engine while driving in case of some emergency there must be some procedure. Looks like you just push the button, any volunteers

we don't have crappy floor mats like the lexus/toyota, so use the brakes and neutral.

I believe you hold the push button for a couple seconds to turn off the engine but i never tried it while driving.

press the button 3 times quickly. That will put you into "accessory" mode, even when you're moving.

i wouldn't think you should turn your car off at speed. no brakes and no power steering doing 60 or 70 is not a good idea. put it in neutral and put on the brakes like its been said by others.

Your car still has enough vaccuum built up for 2 stops.

After you turn your car off, pump the brake pedal. The first one will be like the car is on. The 2nd will be harder, but still managable.

No power steering at speed means the wheel will be loose; you just have to hold it straight

One concern I do have, is that I don't think ABS is active if the car is in ACC. Anyone care to test and verify?

I'd be worried about the steering wheel locking up when you turn the car off. I don't think the ACC position unlocks the wheel, so if you turned it off and needed to turn you might be SOL.

I don't remember exactly

but, if you press the button while driving at 5mph or slower, it will shut off the engine at one touch.
When driving at a higher speed, you need to press three times.

There is a thread and i believe it's also on the manual.

So much confusion, but guess where the answer is.....

The owner's manual:

Do not operate the push-button ignition switch
while driving the vehicle except in an emergency.
(The engine will stop when the ignition
switch is pushed 3 consecutive times or the
ignition switch is pushed and held for more
than 2 seconds.) If the engine stops while the
vehicle is being driven, this could lead to a
crash and serious injury.

The Lexus situation seems to one of computer taking over the car (unless you want to believe the floormat is the issue) preventing you from braking, shifting into N, etc.
