G37 Coupe - Winter Options

G37 Coupe - Winter Options
Hi everybody! I am very close to buying my G37, and I need some help figuring out which model to buy, for my limited winter driving.
I know I want the G37, and I've decided on the coupe. It was a hard choice but I also decided on the AT since I do so much commuting in heavy traffic.
My only problem is that I live in Cincinnati OH, and through January and February we do get some snow. This is going to be my daily driver, and I need to know if it is practical for me to get the Journey Sport package, when I will be driving in snow for a couple months.
I love the 19" rims on these cars, and really want to keep them. If I get the G37x it only comes with 18" rims.
So, what are my options? The Journey Sport package, but then get a set of winter tires? Will that be enough? Do I just need tires, or do I need a whole new set of rims as well?
If I do have go with the G37x to survive the winter, is it possible to get a set of 19" rims for the summer? I've read some posts that say it is recommended not to, and it's hard to get the right sizes. I'm left a little confused.
At the end of the day I'd like to have a G37 coupe with 19" rims, but I need to be able to survive a little bit of snow. Which way should I go?
Thanks for the help!!

If your considering getting the sports model over the awd just becuase it has 19" then go shoot yourself. There honestly is no difference and if I were you I would go for a fully loaded 6mt sports coupe. It has more to offer except the 19 inch rims. You get the 14 inch rotors with bigger brakes, better suspension, adjustable bucket seats, manual tranny which is more fun(you can get auto if you prefer), and 4 wheel steering(optional).
ALso you said you commute in heavy traffic. I live in Chicago. I commute to downtown everyday, and back. Snow is not an issue. Busy streets get cleared before the snow reaches them but for safety and security you can get snow tires.
If rims are the only reason why you prefer the sports model and just go with the awd because rims can always be added, and an awd option cant. AWD is safer and more reliable anyway you look at it. You dont seem to care about the other sports options anyways.

We have 3 months per yr where there may be snow, I would've got the X if it was out back then. We've always had RWD, but the G37 isn't a good winter car, even with snow tires (it is acceptable with snow tires). We've had IS300 & BMW 3-Series before, & they were both better in snow. I think it has to do with tire size, the minimum G37 snow tire is 18", bigger than the IS300 & 3-Series snow tires. If that's the case, another reason to go with the X over the S.

I *do* like the other options in the sports package. Who wouldn't want better brakes and a firmer suspension?
I just need some advice about how the sports package handles in winter, and if I will new rims and snow tires, or if even with that it is stupid to drive in the snow?
I'd also like to know if anyone has put 19" rims on the X and what my options are there.
Thanks!

I drove my 08 with snow tires and wheels this past winter in the snow and really had no problems. Sure, you have to be a little bit lighter on the gas on take off, but other than that, I really had no problems.
Its all up to what you want- The sport package is nice with everything that it comes with. I have never been in an X coupe, so I can't say how they are.
The winter setup that I have is 18" aftermarket wheels and vrederstein snow tires, which are excellent in bad weather.

G37 Sport or non-sport is not made for the snow. Many on this forum have complained about it but this was before the AWD was released. Even snow tires, according to most posts, only helps a bit. Also, you're asking for problems with the paint if you drive your G in the snow (street additives that the city places on roads during times of snow). I've yet to hear of anyone placing 19's on the AWD.

I have a 2009 x and it's very good in the snow. In addition to the all wheel drive, there is a snow button that starts the car out in 2nd gear. It just helps make it easier to pull out into traffic from a side street in the snow. I was in the same situation as you. I live in upstate new york where we have snow for 4 or 5 months. The g wasn't even an option for me until the x became available. I thought I'd miss not having the 19's, but the 18's don't look horrible at all. I'm sure you can get aftermarket wheels for the summer if that's what you really want. I can't really speak for the difference in the brakes and it sounds like you have already decided about the automatic vs. manual. I happen the like the front end of the non sport better as well.
Whatever you get, you're looking at a great car and you'll be very happy with whatever you chose. Good luck.

I live in Cincinnati too. I don't think we get enough snow to justify having an X drive G37. The snow we get is minimal. We get about 5 good days of snow a year where the roads are covered, etc. Why don't you get what you really want so you don't regret it down the road and get a junker for the snow days, or rent a car if you know its going to snow.

I'm in NW Indiana and we had a pretty snowy winter here this year. I have 18" snow tires and rims on my 6MT S. It handles GREAT in the snow. I was impressed the first heavy snow I drove it in. Just make sure you get really good snow tires.

Just regular 5 spoke 18" rims with these all around:

They are pricey, but very good in the snow. Just take them off as soon as it starts warming up, if not, they wont last long at all.
