Hello, all. I got a 2008 G37 Sport coupe this past Sunday. I'd test driven the 08 and 09 sedan previously, and I was familiar with the clutch and shifter before I pulled the trigger. I love the car, but... living with it every day, I find that to shift smoothly, it feels like I have to ride the clutch a bit, most noticeably on the 1-2 shift. Does anyone else experience this, and/or have any G37 6MT technique tips? A friend suggested skipping 2nd and going 1-3, which I've tried and works OK. My previous car was a 1st gen. TSX 6MT which I drove without issue for almost 6 years. The above is not intended as criticism, I'm just curious. I'd get this car with a 6MT again no question. Thanks.

i see where you are going,,, from my experience that if you shift from 1st to 2nd in high rpm, there might be a little clunk at the moment of changing gears. i think you probably have to let off the clutch slowly. as far as skipping gears.... i see the 5th gear being useless a lot of times.... not only in G but i think all the cars with 6 speed tranny....

so i tend to skip 5th from 4th to 6th, you are definately right,,,, 6mt on a G is very nice.

You'll get used to driving it properly, just like with any new car, its different. It's pretty easy to drive smoothly after about a week.

Absolutely don't skip gears. This will F up your trans and is the cause for many owners issues. Learn how to drive the car.

you'll get smoother as you drive it more. DON'T SKIP GEARS! If they weren't needed they wouldn't put them in there. When I went from my 06 Civic Si to the G I was a little rough shifting for a couple weeks. Honda/Acura are some very smooth and soft clutches cause they don't have a lot of power. So 200HP to 330HP requires a stiffer & more aggressive clutch.

I understand where you are coming from.... you do ride the clutch a little but try letting off slowly and you will barely get that clunky/jerking motion. btw... I skip gears once in a while and I know others who do to... and I never heard of anyone messing up their tranny's.

thats one of the biggest reasons to have an MT, to put it in whatever gear you need to.

If i get on the highway and im already doin 60-70 in 4th, im not gonna go to 5th then 6th, just put it right into 6th and cruise.

Skipping gears while accelerating is definitely bad for tranny because it would put more strain on the engine and tranny internals, but going from 4th to 6th to just maintain speed or use cruise control would be fine.

At times I feel as though it is smoother to rush the shift. Even though I drive around like Mrs. Daisy is in the back, if I make a decisive and quick transition between gears I find it to be smoother.

As with anything, practice is the key and get to know where your shift points are to make an easy transition.

Skipping Gears messes up the tranny? So If I want to accelerate and I am in sixth and want to get into third..I have to go to 5th then 4th then 3rd?? I don't think so.

Skipping gears does not mess up the tranny at all if you do it properly, rev-match is very important in this car when downshifting. Skipping gears while upshifting is fine also as long as your doing it to maintain speed. Dont go from 2nd to 6th and floor it obviously. As far as driving it smoothly, yes this car does take some getting use to because you do have to ride the clutch a little do get smooth becasue of how abrubt the grab point is, it's also very high in it's travel which doesnt help. I think that's why I've seen some members burning out their clutch at 14k and 18k miles because the clutch was probably ridden alot. Overall it's a blast to drive manual, just wish it had a little smoother drivetrain.

Ive noticed the clunk as well in 2nd. You ether have to catch the realese point and release it REALLLY SLOW, to the point that you loose so much speed, or what I do i sometimes just hit the gas very very very lightly when im basically off the clutch and saves the clunk.
