...the window lowers because no upper window frame cases the window to meet the roof line. The window fits, under, the roof line and adds a classy look the the flowing lines of the G. I know what you mean about the window getting smudges...but I'll take that to have a clean roof line.
FYI bemmers have used this same method as well....

yes when the window slides down it lets rain into the cabin. i was out in a downpour and it let in alot of water on the drivers side, which the water rain down to the front speakers, not sure if it went through the grated speaker guard, had to wipe off alot of the excessive water
