^^ agree, this post saying the 7AT is a gimmick is completely misleading, made-up B.S.

Try driving one of the new cars with the 7AT before you spread misinformation. I have driven my wife's new 09 FX35 w/ 7AT for quite some time, and I will tell you that I would actually think about getting a 7AT G37 instead of my 6mt. NO WAY would I even consider saying that about the old 5AT. The difference is very substantial.

I won't waste my time listing out every detail that can easily be discovered in a 15min test drive, but:
1. Shorter low gears mean noticeably harder pull/acceleration down low
2. Shorter 3rd gear makes for 6MT-like highway passing power
3. MUCH more frequent torque converter lock-up makes for 6MT-like "connected" feel -- you get off the throttle, the car slows down with the engine still engaged to the tranny. A lot less of this "disengage the engine when off the throttle" slushbox feel.
4. Faster downshifts, especially in lower gears. Her FX also does a very quick revmatched downshift via paddles all the way into 1st gear even if it results in 5000+ rpm in that gear.
5. Lower cruising RPM in that tall 7th gear (1700rpm @ 60mph) for more laid-back feel and slightly better mpg.

Basically the 7AT feels a lot more like a 6MT down low but with an extra gear for low-rpm highway cruising. Would I trade my 6month old car for it? No, not unless I'm rich enough to throw away $5,000 and not care. But if I were in the market today, would I buy an 08 5AT at discount over an 09 at list? Hell no.

The 7AT in the newer gen cars still feels a lot like the 5AT in the coupe. For the record the coupes 5AT is calibrated much differently than in the Sedan. For those of who who may be experiencing the 5AT Sedan loaners there is much more "play" in the TC. The coupe has less play and quicker/ smoother engagement.
However the 7AT in the newer gen cars is still an improved tranny. There is more lockup from the TC because of having more higher gears. There is less lock up in the 5AT but it still locks up relatively quick.
The new 7AT shines most in manual mode where you are controlling the gears. In auto mode, and maybe that's because I have a grounding kit, the 7AT seems to hunt for gears a little longer than in the 5AT .
Overall however unless money was not an issue, which in this case it seems that's the case, I wouldn't trade an 08 for an 09.

well lets see how well the 7 tranny holds up. Im sure they'll test it soon enough and see how it fairs in comparison. I would love to see 0-60 and 1/4 mile figures and also the 26 mpg compared to 24 I wouldnt be surprised its closer to 1 mpg difference.

an automatic tranny is still that 5 spd or 7 spd. Of course there would be a difference but its splitting hairs and more in the head than on paper.

time will tell but changing gears takes time and also on not necessary cruising 35 mph.

Just my opinion.

911 pdk the auto tranny worth praising. two extra gears and better ratios blah blah blah. like we really need round heated seat controls as well cause they're ergonomic. lol

I have seen many changes from the 08 one, the 09 is has more options:
  1. clear front light ( No orange signal color ).
  2. light can be moved with the wheels left and right.
  3. new 7th speed gear.
  4. 4wd (optional).
I'm about to change the car because of the 7th speed gear (That was the 1st reason).
I need your opinions please to choose between the 2 models (stick on 08 or change it with the new 09).

Thank you very much

I just bought a 09 and tell you this. If you don't need awd get the 08. But if you need awd (snow etc) and this would be a daily driver you can forget about 08. It does NOT get simpler than this...

the 0-60 and 1/4 miles won't be that much different, i don't think this should make or break your decision to get an 08 5at or 09 7at

Ohh gotcha, I forgot about that part.

Anyway, my biggest two reasons not to get the 09 would be:
- You're wallet is eating the steepest part of the depreciation curve from the 08.
- There is no significant performance advantage of having the 7AT.

I've test driven a few 08's and a few 09's. I don't know where you guys get the idea that the seven speed is better than a five speed. Someone posted it takes a 15 minute test drive to tell the seven speed is far better, BS! The five speed is a whole lot more racy than the seven speed. The seven speed is great for the "luxury" part but not the "sport" part. The seven speed might be a nice transmission but it's no where near set up right for the G37.
If you're willing to scrafic a little driving experience for fuel milage then get a seven speed.

ive been calling bluff on the 7 spd since it was offered. japan has had the seven speed since 04 on their skyline.

my 08 at 60 mph is at perfect rpm to get instant thrust to 100mph and when i need to I'll shift to DS and up the rpms a little higher.

the 3.7 is more hp than torque so guess where u want to be in the rpm band to get the most of the engine.

my advice get the low apr get a great 08 with all the options you want and call it a day.

when they offer a different body style or substantial performance increase then heck get the newest one but 08 or 09 is a no brainer

and by the way the 7 spd was designed for the g37x cause it was getting lousy gas mileage and the extra weight resistance was taking the pep out of it G. It was designed to give the G37x comparable gas mileage.

Do you really think Infiniti would introduce the G37s to compete with the 335 with their worst tranny.....come on....lol

they new they need the best engine and tranny to compete with the benchmark 335 and now they are going more towards luxury for the auto and sport with the 6 spd.

my opinion

Coming from a black G37, that scratch resistant clear coat sounds like a dream come true. =) That alone makes me want to get a 09 G37. haha I just talked to the dealer at Cerritos Infinity and he told me that the G37 is going to get the same engine as the FX in the near future. Not sure if he's BSing but why would he? If it's true, you can wait for that to happen (if it ever does).

Are there any detailing products that should be avoided being put on the scratch resistant paint?...like polishers, waxes, etc?
