Car&Driver takes on G37 track handling

Another take completely, posted here last Spring.

I've read many accounts of how the G37 does on the track, and none are even close to as disparaging as this Car and Driver review.

As others have said, she is a GT car.

A grand tourer (Italian: gran turismo), (initialised GT), is a high-performance automobile designed for long-distance driving. Any such car could be considered a grand tourer, but the traditional and most common body style is the two-door coupé with either a two-seat or a 2+2 seat arrangement. The name comes from the Grand Tour.
Grand tourers differ from typical sports cars (e.g. Lotus Elise, Porsche 911) in that they are usually larger, heavier (sometimes more than 3,500 lbs), and tend to make less compromise in comfort for the sake of driving ability. For this reason, most have front-mounted engines, which leave more space for the cabin than mid-mounted engines. They also tend to have softer suspensions to provide good ride quality. However, grand tourers do have similarities with sports cars, such as their use mainly of rear- or four-wheel drive, and the term sports car may be used to describe a car with grand touring qualities.

I actually like these comparos because it gives you a relative assessment of how all cars would do under track conditions.
The 37 and 335 are pigs. Too heavy and bloated (I hown 08 g37s) but so what. I mean it ain't a bad compromise. And the times were close for some cars that do not offer what the day to day driving of the g or Bimmer offer. You need to read these with an open mind.
I used to race Corvettes and I sucked at it but I drove with some really incredible drivers. 10/10 ths at the track is a quantum leap above the most aggressive driving on the street so the blemishes of the g won't be seen on "aggressive" cornering on country roads or ramps on highways.
I think there are some great track cars that have street civility- Cayman S, 911, and c6, Miata but I was unwilling to get either of those mainly because of price or safety.
So the next step down was either the Bimmer or the g and I chose the g. I think it is "close enough" to the others to put a smile on my face.
BTW- I crossed walked before my purchase with the Evo X. I am amazed how medicocre it has done on the track for all the hype. In two comparos including this one it is not as stellar as I would have predicted. The MR is NOT cheap - close to the g. Plus the Mitsubishi experience just sucks.
There is no one car that fits the bill- I used to have three cars at all times depending on mood- Drag- Supra, Track- STI, everyday-fx 45 but I am down to one and I could not be happier with the G.

It's no wonder you can get a full year subscription to all of these Car mags for $7.50 now. These guys are just copy ****** and will do anything to stir up the pot to sell more street versions of these rags. The G is no slouch, but these testers are..
I hope they need to borrow some money to make payroll and find out their bank is on lock down and then go out of business.
Hey Porsche's sales for last month were DOWN 45%. I think the end of the "super car shoot outs" and whatnot are going to be soon over and these guys will have to test the next 36-50 mpg econoboxes. Have a blast with that dudes!!!

Geez. Didn't BMW has heating issues with their TT autos? Did the C&D folks mixed up with the reviews? Did C&D folks also point out there are problems after the CPUs/ECUs were reflashed - like turbo lags? I have tracked my car as well. I didn't experience any brake fade nor engine overheating. I owned a BMW 323 CI before and it was a much worse car at the track. I don't think C&D knows what they are talking about. That's the reason why I don't buy their magazine.

Yeah, I like C&D. Objectively, it looks like all solid competition. The G Coupe is a GT, so I think it did rather well considering it's overall heft. I think Motor Trend noted some issues with Infiniti brakes as well...and recommended that a switch to a higher-temp brake fluid might help. Anyhow, while their impressions were worded kind of harshly, I doubt they were that inaccurate, considering the caliber of the competition on the track....

When the first wave of diesels hit, I began wishing I had been born five years earlier, even though it would have meant I would have been elligible for Vietnam! Nothing sexier than a diesel Olds Delta 88 with 105 hp.
I think the '75 Corvette had a whopping 175 hp.
Oh for the good old days!

Ifs funny how different this review is from the one that was done when the car was first released. There was no limp mode issue at all when it was initially released and tested hard against the 335 which did have limp mode issues.
i wonder if Infiniti changed something on later released models that's causing the limp mode.

There is a good one on youtube that has the BMW breaking down at the end of the track test and none of those bad things were said about the G. Granted, the G is not a track car, but neither is the Bimmer.
