Break in period

My 6MT will be in tomorrow or the next day at the latest. I didnt have a lot of concern for the break in period with the loaner Journey but it is not like I have been overlly brutual with it.

Anyone have any recommendations on the way to drive in during the break in period. I believe it 500 miles these days. There can be arguments made for keeping the RPMs low and also some who believe to drive it hard during the break in period. I have always followed the car makers instructions to be on the safe side but have yet to read about the break in period while in a loaner.

There's been a few long topics about this. Including links to some studies that's been done to show that there really is no break-in period to new cars today.

Infiniti recommends 1,200 miles.

50 is really all that's needed. Say an entire tank of gas to be safe. 1200 miles is a little excessive.

1200 miles really? WOW, I have not heard of that in over 20 years. 500 miles seems to be the norm these days.

I will get out the manual before my car comes but 1200 miles is just too excessive if you ask me.

I agree, it's a little excessive. The manual does say 1,200. Like I said before, take it easy the first tank of gas 250-340 miles thats all that is really needed.

I would be curious on what the justification is in the eyes of Infiniti to put 1200 miles in the manual. I wonder if they figure most people will only do half that and are trying to get people to take it easy for 500 - 600 miles are if there is some aspect of the engine that is unique to this car?

The engine needs lttle break in. It's the tranny, brakes, and other moving parts that you should ease into, plus the Bose System

Hit her hard early for short bursts. It'll be fine.

When I break in my cars, I drive it like I normally would with short stints on the gas. It's very important to let the engine slow itself down to get a good ring seal. Also, it's important to not let the car sit at a certain rpm (aka cruise control) for long periods of time during break in.

Also, I'd change oils after 100miles, 250 miles, and then finally 500 miles. Keep an eye on tiny metal flakes in your oil as their should be some in the beginning stages and basically none after 500miles.

Do it right the first time, and you won't have to worry about it later on down the road.

Hope this helps.

Actually I have to make a correction. The break in period for the S2000 was 1,000 miles.

What do these two cars have in common: The VTEC/VVEL systems. Honds said not to go into the VTEC zone (6k-9k) duing the break in.

The extra break in time might have to do with the VVEL in the G37.

Did last years G35Coupe have the VVEL and what was the break in period for it?

That may be the case but it still could be the reason for the extended break in period.

I am going to drive conseveatively but not slow for the first 500 miles and then be more aggressive for the nex 500 - 700 miles and then really fully test the capabiltiies.

I dont mind following the recommendations by Infiniti.
