Wow. I can't believe there are this many people out there using these techniques. It's not a newborn infant, it's an engine. In a car that's very technologically advanced. Even the VVEL is designed to warm the car up faster "in order to reduce pollution," according to Infiniti. I have yet to warm up or cool down my car, and I would bet that a trained technician could tell no difference in my engine to many of the posters' here. /Rant.

general rule is... wait at LEAST 15-30 secs. Let everything stabilize and fluids start circulating. This is on a COLD start... i.e in the mornings when u first start ur car for the day. On actual COLD mornings u can let it go more, but not more than a minute or ur just wasting gas.

After that, don't drive aggressive for a few min... just cuz ur needle is already btwn the H and C for the temp, doesnt mean ur oil temp is there. Water heats faster than oil. Synthetic oil may show one of its advantages here.

Later in the day when u start up, just wait at least 15 sec bfr moving. Use ur judgment and go forth and drive!

I usually let it idle in the morning for about 15-20 seconds as a still have to drive 20-30 mph for 1.5 miles to get out of my neighborhood. By that time everythings good to go. Always a good idea to let the car warm up before gunning it, you use a lot more gas when the car is cool too. No need to let it idle after running it hard, it has no turbo.

The metaphor is lost on you so I'll put it this way. Different materials cool down at different rates. That's why it's important to cool down if you've run a car hard, particularly forced induction cars. The FI generates A LOT of heat so certain components heat up a lot more. If these parts that are extremely hot heat up and cool down at a rapid pace too many times, it can lead to a break down in the material that they're made of. Basic physics. Metals heated up at high temps and cooled down rapidly make them more rigid, but at the same time more brittle.
