Top Gear - European G37 test
#17
The price of gas is way higher in Europe than in the US, therefore the whole driving experience is more expensive in Europe. Only people w/ $ can afford our beloved gas guzzler G37. So this wealthier market that Infiniti is trying to reach will be pickier and will prefer a more refined car even if is a bit more expensive.
Here in the US more people can afford to drive a gas hungry G and you don’t have to be rich to get a G37 therefore Infiniti will trim the car down to make it more affordable and this is aaight w/ me.

Absolutely. The FX35 and FX50 about to hit US market will have the 7AT in them. If Inf doesn't put the 7AT in the 09 G37 I will be shocked, but they will most definitely put it in for the 2010 year. Historically they like to share trannies.

I still cant figure out why people are so hung up on the 7AT?
To me, it doesnt make much difference unless they go dual clutch like on the GT-R.
7AT only really means a tenth (maybe) off of 0-60 and a mile or 2 better on mpgs.
More gears on an auto usually means more places for the computer to screw up.

It absolutely is not dual clutch. It is JATCO, not Aisin. Nobody has reported faster shifts than the 5AT, in fact, motor trend said it is exactly the same shift speed. The 5AT has rev-matching. So pretty much everything in Tarkus' post is incorrect.
The 7AT helps performance somewhat -- the FX35 0-60 time was 7.1 w/ the VQ35DE and 5AT and now it is 6.1 with the VQ35HR and 7AT. Some of that comes from the engine but I have to believe some of it comes from the tranny.

I don't see how it wouldn't affect gas mileage. It should add another 3-5 mpg. Think about it... cruising at 65mph on 5th gear at about 3200 rpm is it? ( not sure ) vs cruising at 65mph on 7th gear at about 2400rpm. That should make a huge difference.

^^ Plus one to that I did not buy this car for gas milage. Stop crying about gas prices. If you cannot afford gas buy a different car. I know we all like to bit%h about the price per gallon. but come on if it is that hard on your finances that say you cannot afford $40 more a month come on sell the G and buy a smart car.
