Thats dumb how they made the car still drivable without the key. I thought the key has to be at least near by. They should fix that bug. I know for the Lexus 450 it will start but once you leave the car the car beeps warning that it's losing signal with the key. It will still stay on but will not drive once the key signal is lost.

But I think another poster before made a good point; if your key fob runs out of batteries while you're driving, the car shouldn't just shut itself off! It's just simpler that way so people won't be stranded on the road and not know what happened...

Update, for those who are interested: it turns out my mechanic didn't trigger the engine immobilizer! lol... he just shorted out the fuse to the engine (duh).

I did this many years ago, shorty after purchasing my 240sx. It was only for a couple of hours, but there was no lasting damage at all.
As a matter of fact, I sold that car with 180k on the odo and it still ran like new.

Actually, with the luck I have had recently with cars, maybe I should have done that to all of them.

leaving car engine on

glad to hear that there are others like me who have forgotten to turn off the engine when I went into a store to shop. Left it for an hour--very weird feeling when I returned to see it still running. My fear (and it should be for anyone else who has left it on) is that I could do it in my enclosed garage which is below my living area. Installed an extra C02 detector in the basement next to the garage just in case.

Funny, I used valet at a restaurant the other day and forgot to give them the key. I went in and sat at my table, maybe 2000 ft away from where I had dropped of for valet, the valet guy came in looking for me because when he put the car on drive to park it, it shut off and obviously couldnt turn it back on.

It was a funny event this guy looking for me all over the restaurant. So I guess it does shut off if someone tried to put it in drive without a key near buy.

I forgot to close my sunroof last night. Left my credit card sitting right in the drivers seat. Had to park outside because my garage was full of crap.

how long does it last?

Does anyone know how long the car motor stays active with the car is away from it's owner/fob key? I was parking outside my apartment talking to my friend and told my roommate to drive into my complex and park the car without me. Turned out I had the key still but he was able to drive up to the complex and park in the back of the complex without any problems. That is so disturbing to me. When does the engine kill...if it ever kills? What if I get mugged and someone steals my car? Oh the horror!
