How many miles worth of gas when distance to empty is ---?

I wanted to see how many miles I can go when my distance to empty is ----. So far I've only gone a couple of miles past this point before filling up. I'm not looking it to push it until the last drop gas, but it would be a good to know just in case I can't fill up.

Thanks.

I believe this means the car does not know, it's recalculating the remaining miles accordindly to your driving behavior. Once you sustain a driving style (either aggressive or not) for a couple of minutes, you will have a new calculated miles to empty. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I've gone about 25 miles past that point. I didn't have the nerve to go any farther. It reminds me of that Seinfeld expisode where Kramer and the car salesman wanted to see how far they could go past E.

When you get the ---- that is Infiniti's way of telling you that the gas tank is empty and you are "running on fumes". I drove that way for several miles and still only got the tank to hold 17.8 gallons. The owner's manual says the tank holds 20 gallons.

Every vehicle manufacturer builds in this "reserve" fuel capacity to discourage drivers from running out of gas. No car I have ever owned was actually empty when the gauge or computer says it is. It's common to have 1.5 to 3 gallons of fuel left; however your fuel system isn't able to puck up every last drop of fuel so you can actually run out of gas with over a gallon or more left in the tank.

I know this from lots of personal experience (not in the G though).

I was always taught to not let it get low, I know things happen but I rather not even try..

You can safely drive AT LEAST 50 miles. The gauge only reads about 17 gallons, I too only usually put 17.2 in the tank so there is almost 3 gallons left.

Something I noticed is:

After it displays 10-11 Miles Left on the Gauge it will Turn to ----

so it will go

11
10
----

But if you look on the navigation Information Screen, it will show the single digits all the way till 5 or 1 I think before it shows ----

But I have gone about 25 Miles after the "-----" Sign but I have been told if you let your gas tank get low it is bad for the fuel system.

Also like everyone else, when I fill up when it says ---- I can get 17-18 Gallons in there and I know it holds 20 Gallons

DiamondGCoupe hit it on the head - the gauge leaves a reserve of approximately 3 gallons to "idiot proof" the car against someone (like me!) running it out of gas. I did it on purpose once in my Maxima to see how far it goes. 63 miles after the empty light came on. About 3 gallons.

As far as the myth of it being bad to run the car low on gas, it's just that - a myth. It's not good to run it out of gas, but there is absolutely no harm that comes from running it low.
  • There is usually no "trash" that will screw up your injectors in modern gasolines.
  • If there were particulates of any appreciable size, that's what a fuel filter is for.
  • It doesn't cause your engine to "suck up water in the tank" becasue there is likely none in there and if there were it would be on the bottom of the tank and be sucked up first as water is heavier than gasoline.
  • In most modern vehicles if you do run out of gas, and immediately stop the engine and don't attempt to dry start it repeatedly, you won't likely do any damage. It should restart as soon as you put sufficient fuel in the tank for the fuel pump to prime itself.
I have rum my Nissan out of gas at least a dozen times over the years with no ill effects. 210K+ miles and running stong.

yep.
i've driven mine for over 2 days on EMPTY... (2 days it went past)
my commute is 10 miles each way... so that's 40+ miles... (stop and go too)
the fill up was 18.9 gallons... i was shocked... because i pushed it pretty far other times and could never get past 18.1 or 18.2 before i broke down and got gas.

now all i can think about is Kramer.... LOL

Ehhh but you gotta remember your using a lot more gas turning on and off the car, 40 miles city would be safe but not if your gunna run errands. You got lucky but I wouldn't push it that far again, I did run out of gas once, and it was sooner than I've safely made it before PLENTY of time. Just one of those things. I too have heard that its not good for the sensors to run the car low always but I never fill up until its downnn (unless theres a Hurricane coming) and have never had a problem with my gauge sensors. Just don't put V-Power(Shell) in your tank often, it has a lot of sulfur compared to other gases that can mess up the sensors (so says my Infiniti techs) stick with CHevron, BP, and V-Power every once in a while.
