Will there be a 6AT in the near future??
I was wondering if anyone has heard any rumors or any kind of info from any insiders if Infiniti plans on introducing a 6AT on the G37 in the near future like for a 2009 or 2010 model? I really want to get a new G, but the whole 5AT is holding me back. Mainly because of the not so great gas mileage people are reporting, and I would definitly not want to get a new G only to have one come out the next year or two that has a 6AT. 6AT appears to be the norm now, espeically with cars in the same class as the G, and it is surprising that Infiniti did not introduce the new G with a 6AT, and before someone says that's why they have a 6M, I'm more interested in the paddle shifting, and I want my next car to have it. My last three cars have been 6 speed manuals, and I'm ready for the best of both worlds.

I would expect that eventually the 6 AT from the GT-R would make it into the G-Coupe. Wouldn't make financial sense to develop it only for the GT-R. However, I would not expect it for a couple of more years.

The gas mileage will get better. Those who didn't own the previous generation G don't remember how it too reported terrible gas mileage in the very beginning of ownership. After a few thousand miles, it got better and better and eventually a non-issue.
I wouldn't image that a 6AT will not make it in the G until perhaps the final year of this generation's production (if that) or perhaps in a performance model of this generation. This 5AT or a similar version of it, has been used in many Infinitis and Nissans over the years and has been very reliable. The Q, the FX, the M, the Z from what I rememeber all use this tranny. So I doubt that Infiniti wil go the 6AT route becaue of potential cost in developing a new tranny during mid generation of a model, - but I could be wrong.

go with a manual if you want 6 speed. personaly i think the 5at is a slushbox. but i could be wront when the c6 first came out it was 5at then it moved up to 6at w/ a paddle shifter option. still manual is better unless you have a sophisticated automatic like in the porsche turbo

Manual isn't "better" so to speak.. It's just different. Remember, Automatics now shift faster then you could in a Manual. If you gave a 6AT the same gear ratios as a 6MT... You'd get pulled on after 1st gear

not true at all. True Automatics which is what this system is still does not shift as fast as a manual. Only sequental systems i.e. BMW SMG 2-3, ferrari F1 system, Lamborgini Sequental system and so on shift faster then a manual. Until inifini puts a full sequental in it will not and does not shift faster then a manual

It is a moot point at this juncture anyway as the bottom line- acceleration- has proven to be quite comparable between the two.

the new smgs and dsg trannys are great on the circuit track...i admit autos now are more advanced and are not what they used to be. the slush box on the IS350 pulls it to 13.5 1/4 mile times stock (you see them on youtube ALL THE TIME)...not bad for an auto.
driving a 6mt is more fun due to the connection you get from the car. there is no substitute for rowing the gears.
but performance-wsie...if you have a dual clutch or smg set up...it is almost a non-issue.
