Yea my 04 G35 sat in the driveway anytime there was snow and my 37 will do the same.

Orbie, I'm totally with you on this. Cars are meant to be driven, to have fun with! What's the point of buying a fun car only to look at it in the garage? To look back from old age and think, well, I really kept those cars looking nice in the garage. You might as well buy a painting and hang it on the wall if you're only going to look at it. A new car isn't an investment, it'll depreciate anyway, so we might as well enjoy them.

I was a victim of the disease myself before. I used to have a beautiful 1993 Porsche 911 that I bought used with only 11,000 miles. I rarely drove it, and when I did, I was absolutely paranoid about dings, stone chips, etc. In 7 years I put about 3,000 miles on it. I finally sold it because I never drove it. After it was gone, I realized what an idiot I was. What good did it do me to have it covered up in the garage all the time? All I did was preserve it for the next owner.

Not again. I plan to drive the G37 all the time, it will be my "daily driver".

 

Don't get me wrong here guys and gals a car is ment to be driven but when we get 1.5' of snow and my road is not plowed does anyone thing the G37 with or with out winter tires will get anywhere but stuck? I agree cars should be driven but it needs to be driven when and where it can be enjoyed.

 

Does anyone know if getting my sport tires siped will help with winter traction? Is siping tires in general worth it?

 

1. Don't do "siping." Waste of time and will mess up your standard tread.
Do get tires and/or tire/rim combinations that are designed for winter conditions. Yes it's more $$$ ... It's your life that's on the line.

Bridgestone Blizzaks are good, according to user reports. But remember, as they get below 1/2 tread life they lose efficiency rapidly. The Finnish Hakkas (Hakkepellita) have a good rep.

No snow here, but another thing to remember if you are using "Summer Tires:"
As temps approach 40 deg F, they can get squirrelly. The compound will not provide the traction they are designed for. If it gets really cold, better slow way down, or else!

 

The G37 was the car I was planing to buy when the lease on my current car was up until I realized there was no AWD option. As much as RWD performance is important, people living in places like NY where snow and ice is not uncommon in the winter, it is simply not a practical option. I hope an X model comes out soon, and if anyone has any info on one, please post a reply.

 

A month or so ago, Edmund's Inside Line quoted someone as saying that an G37 AWD coupe was going to happen, but they couldn't tell when. Not much help for this winter, unfortunately.

 

I just picked up a set of Blizzak's for my G37s. They are 19's which means I won't have to worry about rims for my winter tires. Sure I will have to be diligent about the cleaning but I think that is the price I have to pay for wanting to drive a sweet car.

The rear's are the same but the fronts are 225/40's instead of 225/45's.

I asked around and was told that it wouldn't mess anything up. I got a mildly used set (~2k on them) for a pretty good price.

 

I'm getting the he11 out of Chicago and moving to Texas.

 

yeah get winter tires. i was driving today in the rain and hit the gas a little on a turn not hard at all and i skidded out a little

 

I've owned three AWD cars and numerous RWD cars. The best of all worlds in heavy snow is an AWD car equipped with snow tires, and that's because AWD will provide better traction when going up hills. As others have correctly pointed out, tires are the most important factor in driving in snow. If you buy a set of wheels with snow tires from Tire Rack, you shouldn't have any problems driving in NY winters.

 

I noticed that the winter tire packages on tirerack.com have all four tires at the same size. Was wondering, since the original setup on the G37S is two different sizes, front and back, if it is ok to run a winter setup with all tires the same size.

 

It shouldn't be much different in winter, since the optimal is to have more narrow tires/wheels so they can "bite" better into the snow.

For track wheels/tires, I'd go for another set of OEM ones since they look great!
