Proper Break-in Procedure

It is on every automotive forum, but surprisingly has not made its way on to this one, yet. I figured I would start a thread for people to post their methods of properly breaking in a car. Being able to post about this means only one thing...the countdown is coming to an end.

I have never been a a fan of the "not WOT until 500 or 600 miles" rule. Specifically, under two instances, I have accelerated through the gears after 200 or 300 miles. The cars were broken in correctly and always dynoed on the higher end of the scales. I always vary my speed on the highway and never let the engine drone. I DO NOT launch the vehicle. I also try not to brake too hard at first. Going for long drives always seems to do the trick.

Please post your methods below! Thanks!

Happy Motoring!

When I got my 07 Sedan, I just followed Infiniti's recommendation of varying the speeds and not taking it over 4k RPMs for the first 2000 KMs.

I have always wondered about the soft vs. hard break in methods. I've heard the hard break in can produce a factory freak, which would be very nice. Of course if it does more harm to the transmission and other parts that wouldn't be so nice.

^^^Thanks for the link. Lots of good information. Still not quite sure which break-in-method I will use when I pick my car up.

A thread from edmunds involving the VQ35 engine in the G35: http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f102f24/0

In summary: there's no conclusive method for breaking-in...lol

working at the dealer and hearing stories especially about oil consumption gives me my own theory....case in point....1000 miles stay under 3500rpms and just do lots of city driving....highway speeds will make the engine run constant so won't help in break in.

I consider this important especially the HR motor is high compression ....

When in doubt, why not just follow the manufacturer's recommendations? If anyone knows what the proper break-in should be for a specific engine, I would think it would be the manufacturer. I followed Infiniti's break-in recommendations to a tee. Will it make any difference down the road? I am not sure. I just didn't see the sense in taking a chance.
