wow i cant believe people are calling the m3 a disgrace when its going to be a beast. Well their are many safety reasons why all cars are getting heavier. My cousin was telling me that all car companies have to design the front of the body in a certain way so that when a a car hits a pedestrian they dont crack their head on the hood right above the engine so the hood of all cars now are either raised a few more inches than normal from the engine, like toyota camry, or like jaguar xkr their is a deployment system that sends the hood upward when contact is made in the front bumber, im sure bmw has some sort of system too or maybe some extra material inside the hood to dampin the impact. I think this safety regulation began the begining of this year so expect all cars to be heavier and their are other safety measures which maybe the cause of inccrease in weight for all future models.

I'm amazed at how relatively light the new Audi S5 will be. 354hp V8, Quattro AWD, a rather large body, and mass of electronics and the car weighs in at under 3,600lbs. Not light, but very impressive for a modern car of its dimensions with AWD and a V8. If that is indeed the weight of the new M3, that is seriously unimpressive for a car with a carbon fiber roof and "lightweight" components.
Of the "regular" luxury companies (BMW, Infiniti, Merc, Lexus, Audi, Acura), I must say that Audi has made the best effort to keep their cars light. The new Audi TT (turbo) weighs under 3,000 lbs which is great. Even the heavier A8 uses lightweight material liberally to save weight.

Personally, the M3 will be a great car, but I think the point of this thread is:

So many people were dumping on Infiniti for the G37 gaining 150 lbs. Yet the G37 is a high value car at only $35-$40k. Surely, the 50% more expensive M3 that is a much more focused performance vehicle should have made an attempt at saving weight. As mentioned here already, the new V8 weighs LESS than the outgoing 6, so this weight is coming from somewhere else. You can't bash the G and not bash the M3 for the same reason (actually more for the above reasons).

Thank you very much for your post. Does anyone know where all the extra weight is going to?

Straightline Speed

Z06 > GT-R > M3 > 335i > G37

Track monsters

GT-R > Z06 > M3 > G37 > 335i (BMW Overheats! )

Best Interior

G37 > GT-R > M3 (Another boring 3-Series interior) > 335i (See M3.) > Z06

Neckbreaking Looks

GT-R > G37 > M3 > Z06 > 335i

Predicted Reliability

G37 (NA Motor) > GT-R (Extensive, Extensive research) > Z06 > M3 > 335i

Exhaust note

GT-R > G37 > All

Best all around car for the money (Looks, Power, Handling, Interior, Luxury Ammenities, Ho Pimpage)

G37 > All

End of thread...

You're comparing the G37 to the new M3? Somethings completely not right.

I don't quite understand it either. I think the comparisons have stopped though... or hopefully. The comparison with the Porsche was the funniest... and the reason was because of how much interior space there is? *sighs*

Audi has to use an all aluminum body to do that but it is impressive.

The m3 weighs more because it's size is approaching the older 5 series size. Which is a similar weight.

The M3 also has 414 hp. I could forgive BMW for 414 hp. 330hp and barely a proformance improvement over the outgoing G35 coupe? Nope.

Got to disagree on this one. The Z06 is a track monster and when tested in 1995 had one of the best times among production cars on The Ring(Nürburgring).. I'll believe it when I see a production GTR get those 7:15 times being rumored on the Net. Funny I picked out The Ring as it appears to be the specific track Nissan is using to tweak the GTR.

Here's a list of some cars it bested:
7:28-7:40 - Porsche Carrera GT with multiple attempts, different drivers and track conditions
7:40 - C6 Corvette Z06 <------
7:40 - Mercedes SLR
7:43 - 996 Porsche 911 GT3 RS
7:43.5 - Lamborghini Murcielago
7:44 - Pagani Zonda C12S
7:46 - 996 Porsche 911 GT2
7:50 - BMW M3 CSL
7:52 - Lamborghini Gallardo
7:56 - C5 Corvette Z06
7:56 - Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale
7:56 - 996 Porsche 911 Turbo
