Just saw it in person for the first time at Stillen. It's a nice looking car no doubt about it, but I still think it looks too feminine. The brake ducts are really fakes!? Apparently the windshield wiper fluid sit behind the fake opening on the left and some intake fluid drain on the right.
The new headliner material is pretty nice, looks better than the ones in our cars. The shifter feels less direct than the current 6MT, I think Nissan put the rubber insulation back into the shifter assembly. The clutch travel length is less than the G35 and the shifter feels alittle longer. There is now even less headroom in the back and the center 'First Aid Kit' compartment between the rear seats are gone. Good news is the new rear center console is softer than the older one. The interior is an improvement over the outgoing model, but I don't see Infiniti winning any customers from its competitors in terms of the interior.
The exhaust note on the new G37 is 'interesting.' At low revs it sounds similar to the G35 coupe but alittle more mellow. There is a definite rasp when revved up higher and even some metal resonance from the outside. That might just be the preproduction model. The exhaust note is still quite unique, which is a plus for a sport coupe. Under the hood, there are battery cover and brake fluid cover on two sides of the engine bay. The hood and trunk feel very light thanks to the new gas struts. The dip stick access is actually possible now and even the stick itself is perfectly straight. That's probably the most welcoming change on the new car.
Overall I like the G37, but not enough to consider trading in the G35 Coupe anytime soon. Even with a very good deal I'll most likely keep my current ride. To be frank I like the new G35 sedan more than the coupe. We'll probably end up keeping the 5 yr old coupe and get the new sedan down the road.
Big thanks to Stillen, Infiniti and Sport Z magazine for putting together this event. I've been looking forward to seeing the car in flesh for awhile now.
