We all know as the engine gets larger, it's harder to squeeze out more HP/L in NA form without additional technologies such as FI or VVL. So unless the VQ37 is a VQ37VE, I highly doubt it can make that #.
unless i'm missing something, 350in^3 equates to 5.735472 Liters, not 3.5172

what is your calculation based on?

306HP/3.5L = 87.4HP/L
330HP/3.7L = 89.1HP/L
345HP/3.7L = 93.2HP/L

IIRC, the only Nissan engines to date that get 90+HP/L are either VVL or Turbo engines.

I agree, but then again, who knows if the VQ37 will be a stroked version of the current HR or be something totally different...only time will tell

I agree, that's why I say it would only reach those number if it's different than just a stroked or bored VQ35HR. I.E. either use FI or VVL or variable compression tech that they're researching.

Good post. As you probably know BMW gets 104/litre with their E46 and E85/6 engine NA and other like Honda S2000 get some impressive numbers. It will be interesting to see how much more may be punched out with the 3.7. It's supposed to be a "limited production" engine.

370 = 100HP/L

Both the M3 and the S2k have variable LIFT which is similar to VVL. Nissan had VVL implemented in their SR engine. The SR16VE maked 195HP IIRC. Which would put it @ 121HP/L. They also had SR20VET which make 280HP. So if you add VVL and a turbo in the mix, you get 140HP/L. Nissan knows how to make high HP/L engine, no doubt. Rumor has it that the VQ37HR from the GT-R is tuned by Cosworth and it supposed to rev well above 8k RPM and have VVL. So if that's true then, the VQ37HR will have no problem hitting 100HP/L w/ proper tuning.

Good explanation and sound logic. One of the car mags wrote that Cosworth was working with Nissan on engine developement/tuning. I would be disappointed if we did not see something closer to 100hp/l and use of direct injection.
