I call BS on the 38K the dealership is claiming. If for some crazy reason it is true, that just means the resale value of my 2005 will stay strong. I remember looking at a 05 mustang GT convertible when you couldnt get them. I happened to know someone who owned a dealership. They offered me a car for 39K. THANK GOD I BOUGHT MY G INSTEAD. I would still be upside down on that piece of junk in car payments. Now they are a dime a dozen.

$38K base is a joke, just as $650/month for lease. BMW is already offering better lease rates on their site for the 335i.
And why does the $5K jump "tell" you it's got a new engine? All base prices rise over time - it's called inflation. I was expecting $3K more. It's going to rise, but not into BMW territory.

Agreed 100%

I was thinking that they would keep the 3.5L in a non-sport/AWD version of the coupe that would be rated the same horsepower wise, and, would have similar cost starting around 33k.

IMHO, "true luxury sports car" is just a label and not really indicative of what it is. I see it more as an entry level sports car. My guess is there will be two engine choices and AWD available.
