Unhappy Trunk Open Error

Hi All,

I was hoping to come to this group for ideas. I've been dealing with the dreaded trunk open error when dropping the top for the last several years. Usually I can turn the car off and on again and it will cycle, however once or twice a year it will get stuck mid-cycle and I'll need to limp the car to the dealer or have it towed.

Last year my dealer told me it was the battery - and so we replaced it and I kept the car on a trickle charger almost all of the time. However I've already had the error twice this spring. The dealer says the only thing they can do is replace the entire top assembly at $10,000.00

I've stopped the car mid-cycle and I can't find any smashed wires. Also the trunk latch doesn't seem loose. Is there anything else I should try? Should I try to buy the tool and keep a laptop in the car? I hate that I don't have confidence the top will open - it prevents me from using it when I'd like to.

Thanks!

Consult is probably your best (and cheapest) solution here. At least it'll allow you to close the roof and hopefully tell you what caused the issue.

I know I sound like a broken record, but Consult is you friend with these cars. This trunk error probably isn't the trunk, but one of the parcel shelf wires. Consult will tell you. I keep the computer and interface in the car t all times.

I am a bit nervous about Consult - does it come with good documentation? I don't want to make the problem worse, and the threads here don't explain how complex the software is. Finally I went and read the consult threads - and does it need a specific port on the computer or will USB work?

The documentation isn't organized the way I would like,, but it is not bad. If you take it slow and easy it's hard to do any more damage. As far as the port it is a USB to serial adapter so you only need USB. I recommend buying it with the already formatted and configured hard drive, unless you are good at installing virtual machines.

I went to another thread - and it seems like you need a Win 7 laptop to operate Consult - is that correct?
