Convertible Top Issues Part II

Hey guys, I've posted before about my convertible top issues and think I may have gotten down to the bottom of it but would like some insight before I make the decision. My 2010 G37's convertible top is doing some strange things. In the beginning (when I purchased it about 10 months ago) I had a few issues with the top getting stuck when the top would lay down in the trunk with the trunk open. It would stop and say trunk open. A simple turn off and on of the car would fix it and it would operate. Found out battery was low battery.. went to Infiniti and got a replacement. Top was working a little better but still some issues. Finally after some time I had my mechanic see if he could figure it out. He reset the top and relearned the top. It was working for a while again. Now, again, its getting stuck, this time by the latches. As the top is coming down the latches stay closed. I have to keep going up and down and finally they will open and allow the top to latch in. On top of this- while driving randomly it will start to beep and say "roof in operation" "roof closed" "roof in operation" "roof closed"...etc. Before I send it to Infiniti for diagnostic I was wondering if there could be a sensor to check? If I remember correctly I was getting a pump code( which I'm told would be a sensor). It was also saying it was losing connection to the computer so maybe it's the convertible top computer? Would be great if anyone has some insight. Thanks.

Just following up on your post. Were you able to get your issued resolved? How much did it cost to get it fixed?

Thanks

Same issues

Been to dealership 4 times and bought new battery. It works for 2-3 weeks and then issue starts again.

Wow. I wish I found this forum before I bought this CPO 2013 with only 22,000 miles 2 weeks ago. Same top issues as you all have described started right after I brought this "Cream Puff" home. The first thing I read that low battery could be the culprit; yes it was the original batt so I replaced it with a $300 Optima. Went through the window sequence and cycled the top. All good....until the 3rd time, then back doing the same thing as you all described....starts to open, then stops, shut car off and repeat. I'm traveling for work this week so unable to bring it in to dealer. What I'm really scared of is that the CPO warranty runs out
Jan 1, and they'll patch it up to get it past then. I declined the extended warranty because they wanted $3K. Now I'm scared to take it on a planned trip next weekend and get stuck somewhere and be unable to reclose if it's open.

This is our 4th Infiniti...wife currently has a '11 FX. All the past cars were trouble free. Is this just a fluke with the vert? Again, I'm new here. But in scanning through the posts, top issues seem to be a recurring theme. Has anyone ever did a poll on this? Is that easily doable within the forum?

What are you trying to poll? That the vert is prone to have issues with the overly complex roof mechanism? It's definitely true - no poll needed. A fluke though? Not sure if you can classify it that. The car will run just like any other G, but the top is a whole other animal that has not been used on any other cars (that I know of).
Either way, good luck with the repair. It's a wonderful car and hopefully you'll get to enjoy it to its full potential.

Thanks for the reply. Let me clarify what I was asking. I'm just curious, percentage wise, how many folks have had the top issue. I'd assume if over a certain percentage of owners have the same issue, Infiniti might have to take some responsibility, even after the warranty ended.

Want to laugh? We did take it on our weekend trip. Used top 4 times in a row, worked perfect! I have an apt at dealer Monday morning....

So I went to the dealer today. They said that the left flipper is bad, that is, it's throwing a code. They couldn't explain why sometimes it works, sometimes not. They had to order it as not a shelf item.

Here's the fun facts. The car is a CPO, but that part ($1750!) is excluded on the CPO list! But they are a good, honest dealership. (Ray Brandt Infiniti, Metaire, La--outside New Orleans), and this is the 4th Infiniti I've bought from them. They said they will submit to Infiniti for warranty and if Infiniti says no, they will cover it. But also remember this top issue started the 4th time I put it down after purchase, less then a week later.
The point of this long post is a warning that CPO doesn't necessarily cover everything, so beware. And also, this top sh-- isn't cheap!

Flap gears

Youre right, those gears are the cheapest thing ever.

by the way, its easier to replace the gear itself than the entire linkage.

so, if u r interested, let me know!

Crap, mine started doing just that! YOu stop, no beeping. As soon as you drive, it says "roof in operation" and the beeping starts on. And now I can't close the roof!

I'm letting it sit overnight w/the battery disconnected hoping that cures it.

Uggh.

How do I do it? Both flippers are grinding instead of opening or closing. I have to manually push them I to place to operate the top.

When I looked, it seemed like the entire assembly was riveted together.

Replacing flap gears

Yes, its relatively to replace but, you have to drill thoses rivets, remove tha linkage assembly , replace the gear, put it back and install new rivets.

its even easier to get the complete unit replaced...and cost way less!!!

The left flap will not stay locked in place nor operate. When I lower the top, trunk opens & when it’s time for the flaps to span outs, only the right goes& the whole thing stops. If I Manually open the flap and then turn the car off & back on it will proceed to finish lowering the top. no issues closing it back but a mechanic told me that I needed part #79913jj50b “retractable top-linkage left” which was $1,100 (just the part no labor). Has anyone else gone through this & have suggestions?

Metal gears

UPDATE FOR METAL GEARS:

OK guy's, many of you seems interested to get replacement gears for convertible flap gears. Like i said in numerous previous posts, i find a machine shop who was willing to machine metal replacement gears for me. I replace both side on my 2011 vert g37. They work as great as new oem ones but, they are most durable than the cheap plastic oem.
Some of you ask me if i got more in stock. Unfortunatly, they are all sold but, if i have a minimum of 6 order (a pair or one side) i will be able to get more machined. So i suggest to email me to place your order. Quicker a get 6 command, quicker i can place ther order.

If some of you are serious and want one or two, you can e mail me at : guy.menard305@videotron.ca.

I also adjust the price lower ( cost me less for second batch) at 500$ usd for a pair and 260$usd for one side only.

it wont last forever!!!

Thanks!
Guy Ménard
