Not a silly question.
Yes, you can open the trunk as you normally would. The trunk has a panel or divider that has to be in the "up" position in order to lower the top. This helps insure that you have an empty trunk when you go to lower the roof. BMW has the same thing.
This divider sections off the "usable" section of the trunk when the roof is folded inside. It is not much space. Maybe 6" deep and the width of the front edge of the trunk. I can't even fit my laptop bag in this space.
But, it's the price you pay - and totally worth it :-)

What tjp said. You can get a gallon of milk in there as long as it's two half-gallon jugs. That's about it. I find it's a perfect spot for the case the wind deflector comes in.

Note, the Lexus ISC has enough room for a bag of golf clubs. Word is that was the design goal.

Correct lexus you can put golf bags in, the price you pay on that is an ugly *** end btw 2012 and up has no trunk now as they all come with spare tires, you could however always take it out.

I bought a small cordura nylon bad that fits in that space perfectly. I put my smalls in there and forget about it. Its nice if you have small valuables in the passenger area and want to keep them secure while keepinf the top down. Never used the locking glove box for anything of value. Youll get used to it as many of us have, the back seat has become my trunk!

FWIW the retractable hardtop VW Eos has room for two maybe three carry on bags with the top down.

That's awesome I was looking for a custom bag for my pool cue so I could transport it in the trunk when the roof is down

As far as trunk access, sure you can, just pull the drivers seat forward and that whole area behind it is free trunk space.
