"In fairness, both cars had experienced a relentless pounding by journalists with a profound absence of mechanical sympathy before the BMW finally succumbed to the desert heat." - Edmunds.com
They could have been exaggerating, I supposed. But, I doubt they would have said that if there was no reason for it. Of course, stranger things have been written.
I believe we had a couple of near '80* temps in the last month or two -- and that is close to the coast in CA (not too far from Laguna Beach). So, who knows for sure?

No one really knows if this is true here. In theory it sounds like excellent marketing and a way to take it to BMW in many categories. They could easily tier the prices among vehicles. Make this G50 cheaper than the M3 (by at least 5k to make it an easier choice) and have the performance and handling very close. Japan FTW.

Y'all have also read Edmunds review of how the new G37 coupe trounces the 335 coupe.
I didn't read that at all. All it said is that the 335 went into limp mode after many hard runs. I didn't see anything that indicated that the G out-performed the 335 when it wasn't in limp mode, which affects almost all turbocharged cars after several hard runs.
That's nothing new or shocking as I've always said G35 coupe was a much superior driving vehicle than the 3serie. It is a sports car after all and not a retuned luxury sedan/coupe.
That view is shared by almost no one. The G is a fine car but all the performance magazines that I have read, AutoWeek, Road & Track, Motor Trend, and Car & Driver, state that the 3 series provides a superior driving exxperience. Furthermore, neither the G nor the 3 series are sports cars, but are technicall speaking GT cars.
The current G35 will easily match or surpass the E46 M3 at the track while having less HP.
Although the G hasn't been released yet, but I'll be astounded if that statement is true. The G will far too heavy to make that happen, but we'll have to wait and see.
As time goes by, more and more magazine tests will confirm Edmunds review to be spot on. I however think one magazine will give the nod to the 335. That mag is Car and Driver as those old farts are more into refinement. They will call it a performance shootout, but let the inferior performer win due to superior refinement.
There's not much to confirm yet since the Edmunds review didn't really measure anything. It was all about driving impressions. If you recall one of the statements from Edmunds was that the 335 felt quicker, which isn't surprising since it has much more torque.
