Hey, I had the ZR3 in my Jeep, and quite frankly, wasn't very happy with it. Not worth all that $$$, even got a ticket with it (guess I fall into that 4% out of the 94% effective chart speed labs rated it with)....

Although 94% effective is still VERY good, I was waiting for something to be more in the lines of 99-100% effective, and I don't know if you've seen their latest tests and reports, but the new Blinder X-treme units have been 100% effective in jamming every gun they've thrown at it. Blinders older models (first generation units) weren't as effective, but the new X-treme units are said to be top notch! I was sold after see'ing a live demo at Limerock, when some friends of mine (who owned an atlanta laser gun) we're trying to clock a Porsche that had the Blinder unit installed. The gun would either flash "cal-error" (cant read the speed) or just hold steady at 0.

You don't get the fancy display that you do with the ZR, but a simple in cabin audiable tone and LED light is more than enough for me (to let ya know its working). I just got my Blinder in last week, and although I havent gotten around to installling it just yet, but looking at the system, its very straight fwd.

Take my advice, look into the Blinder X-treme system! If it's everything it's been tested to be, it'll be the best $340 I ever spent!

i have the Blinder M20 and it works great! installed it myself and it is a very clean setup. i highly recommend it. saved me a few times already from the deadly laser running LEO's in Largo!

IMO, laser detectors are a total waste of $$$, and since you cant legally jam a police radar, the only line of defense I would ever spend any $$$ on is a laser jammer (which by the way is LEGAL to do so).

The FCC governs radar, and basically states (in lesser words) you cant mess with ANY police transmision including its use of speed radar. If you're caught doing so, you could be fined or even sent to prison, so that's why radar jammers are in fact NOT legal.

Laser is NOT goverened by the FCC but rather the food and drug association and considered a 'light" (believe it or not), and the way laser jammers work is when the police laser hits your car, systems like the Blinder send out a "brighter light" to confuse and reflect off the laser being aimed. In doing so the laser gun can not get an accurate reading, and there's no law stating that we as consumer and citizen can not have in our possesion a "brighter light" than what laser guns use, so laser jamming is legal in almost every state.

The majority of police these days are using laser and that's a fact. Unlike radar which can be detected prior it actually being used to detect your vehicles speed (and you can slow down in time), laser is instant! The second your laser detector goes off, you're already being clocked and it's all a matter of time now. If the cops got a solid reading, you're done, but with laser guns you can get a small margin of error which is how and why people still buy laser detectors. Sometimes a cop has to repoint a laser at the same car a few times before he or she can get a true reading on its speed, and this is the ONLY time a driver using a laser detector may get a break, as you might have enough time to slow down from the initial shot to the one (second or third time) that actually gets your speed.

Police radar, even though ancient in technology, is probably the ONLY reason why anyone should invest in a radar detector, but with so many other things operating on or near the same frequency as the more common police radar bands, false alarms are abundant! They even have units that set of radar detectors (will usually intsall them in 1 mile entervals on highways, to drive people nuts) so its gotten to the point that its more of a hassle to use one.

Hey ducatiguy, which of the BLINDER-X would I need? They offer a M20 (two front) or M40 (Front and Rear).

I definately want to get the M20 but am consider rear protection as well.

Um, my roommate is a PHD student dealing with lasers and because of my doubts I talked to him about this. And like I thought, you cant "jam" lasers!!! It is possible to deflect them but this would require the gun to shoot the deflector head on which wont happen! Having an absorbant paint could work but this would be mucho expensive. Iv seen the systems that have sensors in the bumbers but it still doesnt make since.

The laser jammers don't really jam the laser gun, they emit an overly powerful laser back to the laser gun and confuse it so it doesn't read any speed. The device should be called a laser emitter rather than a jammer.

When "Laser" speed detectors first came on the market, Car and Driver Mag did a nice report on them. The found out that all you had to do to "confuse" them was run your high beams. That shortened the distance to "lock" to about 500 feet. Plenty of time. Well you don't want to run your high beams all the time so they did the next best thing. They put a driving light on the front of the car, that's right, one light. Then they covered it with an infrared filter from Edmond scientific. It worked even better! Lowered the lock rate to about 200 feet. They even said in the article that "aftermarket suppliers should take note" of this. Well, nobody did, at least ad far as I know, but they did come out with LED's that do much the same thing.

OK talked to my roommate...here is the scoop. First his response to my email:
In addition I talked to him personally last night and he also mentioned another key feature. The "jammer" or whatever you want to call it also must act on the same frequency and the laser gun. Cops use a variety of frequencies so the Detector must recieve the signal, calculate the frequency, then reply with same frequency. The hard part of this is the detection!
