Help Power Steering Noise Can’t Fix
#16
Well, i’m not exactly sure how my mechanic installed it haha. But I know he’s installed pumps on my car before.
Ok so I’m on my flush of fluid dextron VI in the Reservoir rn. I’m driving like 20 mins then rotating the wheel lock to lock then emptying and refilling the reservoir. And I think the grinding has become more subtle. After 5 flushed we’ll see if that was the problem. Unless the pump already went bad then i’ll never know.

Then move the wheel lock to lock and it will flush it.
Install everything then do the same while you're filling up. Spinning the pump by hand move the fluid and gives you less chances at dry starts though it requires you to remove the belt.
What you're doing is fine however depending on the old oil it might take a couple of flushes and you'll never know if there was damage to the pump until you replace it one more time after the it's 100% new fluid.

Ok I'm like 5 flushes deep and the issue hasn't gone away. Now I mean, like you guys said, it could have been too late and the pump is maybe damaged now, idk. But I don't feel like there's a good enough chance that replacing the pump a 5th/6th time and using the Nissan fluid will fix the problem for me to justify paying for that again. With that said, I found an Infiniti dealership with supposedly actual mechanics who specialize in g37 and have been working on them for 30+ years (don't go to Infiniti of South Bay btw). I have an appointment tomorrow and they said they will be testing the different components in my system, not just looking at it and telling me to replace everything. So we'll see what happens.
@Ponyryd : Actually its funny you bring up the belt, because after my track day where the fluid was spewing out the reservoir, I also shredded my belt because one of the pulleys went bad. So I had to replace the belt in pulley and it shouldn't be causing any issues at the moment. Also, I don't know too much about when you said about priming the pump, but my mechanic has repaired a lot of PSP's on g37s specifically. So I would assume he knows what he's doing, but then again I can't guarantee anything lol.

I hope they dont hit you with a whole system overhaul since it's not needed however other than a proper visual inspection to determine where the fault is there is not much they can do without starting with a new pump.

Though difficult it's possible to have a bent pulley or pulley bolt that's putting force on the pulley system thus putting force on any Powersteering pump you install by forcing up/down/sideways on the pulley scoring the bearings. I too believe another pump might not fix this situation but it's definitely got me scratching my head. Technically the oldest experienced G37 tech should only have a max of 14 years under their belt so be worry since most dealers have technicians start from ground zero and disregard previous attempts.

so i just got back. The master mechanic came out with me to look at he car and i gave him the whole rundown on everything that has happened. He told me that he would recommend replacing the reservoir and flushing the whole system to nissan atf or dextron vi in the process. He said that the sound he’s hearing is almost always something between the pump and reservoir. And he thinks that since the sound went away for 2 weeks after the reservoir and entire overhaul was done, but then came back, it sounds like there may be an issue with the reservoir filter. Especially since the reservoir is the only thing not oem, and the combination of that with the redline fluid could have been causing issues.
Now the reason I’m trusting this guy is because he came out and checked this out for free. He said that it’s most likely not worth doing the $200 inspection, and if he were me, he would just have my mechanic replace the reservoir to avoid infiniti prices lol. And he said if I see metal bits in the reservoir filter, then the pump is most likely damaged as well.
So i’m going to have this job done on monday. He said if for some reason this doesn’t work, then to come back and pay for the full inspection, and i’ll ask him to look at that pulley bolt as well that you mentioned bull, thanks
