Question How big is too big?

Afternoon All,

First Ill apologize with the click bait-ish title but I couldn't help myself lol. With that addressed, I have been wondering why no one has made intakes bigger than 3 inches for our platform. Besides for the costs and all that, what exactly is the science behind it? Would it be not effective at all to bump up a quarter or half inch in diameter with the obvious chock point of the tb? Is there issues that go beyond fitment and volume with our cars? If this topic has been beaten like a dead horse I apologize ahead of time, just trying to understand what happens past 3 inches.

Thanks!

Magic happens after 3 inches. LOL. Honestly, I don't know if there is any improvement going larger than 3", but my butt dyno really liked step up from 2.5" to 3.5".
Also when I was making my CAI, I had consultation with intake/induction system engineer. He told me that air flow should be as slow as possible, to a certain degree. Also try to make it as straight as possible. Each bend creates a restriction...

I don't know of many who have done more than 3.0" besides Dzionassi, form his post, and Zak Craig on facebook. People use to say, and some still feel 3.0" is too big, but considering even Z1 started producing 3.0" intakes now, it may be from multiple good results (but also posible because of marketing, people want 3.0" so they are making, regardless of gain or no gain). Had an aquaintance get his car redone from z1's 2.5" to their 3.0" and put down 366whp and 302wtq (on E85). I believe his previous numbers were 350whp on E85 (different days, and not sure on dyno since Z1 redid their facility.) only change was the intakes and retune.

@Dzionassi wow, didn't realize you would answer! I'll consider myself lucky lol. So that was basically how I had thought about it. Less bends would be best as for flow and I figured I would just measure the angles from my stillen and adapt it to a 3.25 or 3.5 sizing. I seen that 3.5 is much more readily available and figured thats probably what I would end up trying. I was wondering if to take full advantage of it if I would need cams? I know having all the ported stuff along with the TBs would be a minimum. I'm curious to know where it would all lead up to besides for a pricey bill 😂

@projectpanda13 I agree with you! I feel like the marketing aspect of it will keep 3 inches as the mainstay. I can't imagine companies making 3.5 intakes and then selling for 4 figures that many people would buy them. A profit margin would have to be maintained to make it lucrative and I can only imagine the amount of people who would to install and mess it up royally.
