Differential Fluid Question

I recently taken my 2012 G37xS for 60k maintenance. If i recall correctly, this was the first time I had the differential fluid replaced for the front and rear. In both of the fluid, there were metal shavings and the fluid looked like really bad chocolate milk or mud. The mechanic whom I dealt with suggested that I change out the differential again in about 10k miles just to wash out any remaining debris in there.

My question:

1. How normal is it for differential fluid to come out in that condition?

2. Should I have the differential fluids (front and rear) replaced again in 10k just to wash out any debris that weren't purged this time around or is that just a waste of money?

3. How often are we actually suppose to change the differential fluids? The maintenance manual said one thing, but the fluid that came out really makes me wonder if I should have done it earlier.

Thank you all in advance.

I change the rear end oil on mine about every 15-20K. Changed initially at about 4K miles when I got the car to switch to synthetic, and just recently after it rolled over 22K miles.

It's normal to have metal shavings. It definitely wouldn't hurt (except your wallet) to change out the fluids again. Will it be necessary to do in 10k? I don't think so IMO.

Just wondering, how much are you guys paying to have differential fluid changed?

It was about $35 last time. Total capacity of rear diff is 1.5 qts, $17/qt (redline 75w90). No idea what the front diff or transfer case takes as I don't have those.

G37xS-Life,

The differential fluid change is the easiest fluid change on the G. You only need a wrench, drain pan, 1.5 quarts of fluid and washers (optional). The fluid transfer pump is optional if you have a long neck fluid bottle and the G doesn't even have to be lifted off the ground. You should give it a shot. There is a DIY on this site.

30K is the interval listed in the FSM.
Use gear oil in the diff case(s) and ATF in the transfer case.
