Probably. Mine's been stinky at startup since I bought it 5 years ago.

It's smells like gas or oil or both mixed

I notice a bit of an odor when I start mine, especially when it's cold out... One thing I have noticed and never really it mentioned here is... There's a noticeably different tone to the engine and the RPM drops about 300 rpm precisely at 30 seconds after starting up in the AM. It's not a matter of oil flowing, gradual change in "sound". The changeover occurs at precisely 30 seconds. I suspect the engineers have the ECU coded to burn lean/hot for the first 30 seconds to light up the cats more quickly, to meet emissions standards. I definitely notice the odor more in that timeframe...

When I start up the tractor... the whole garage smells like diesel exhaust for a half-hour afterwards. When I fire up the X5 35d... nothing.

When the engine starts cold it runs rich because fuel has a harder time vaporizing in the cylinders under low temperature. Because of this a lot more unburnt fuel than normal is passed through the exhaust. This gives exhaust a much stronger gasoline smell.

if you have a AWD I suggest looking at your ball joints, or front control arms. Check the boots to see if there is a small tear...you may have grease spitting out and thats wear the burning smell is coming from (potentially).
