6MT Gear Noise Normal? - Problem FOUND! Feb Update see post 12

All,
Attached is a recording I made yesterday in my G37.
I whines is all gears, except 5th. (which is the 1:1 ratio and the counter shaft does not have any engine torque going through it)

Background:
-I have only owned the car for a few days, so history of noise is not known
-Doesn't change when cold or warmed up, it is always present when in gear and accelerating.
-I think the noise is much less when de-accelerating, but will double-check tomorrow.
-Noise is gone/almost gone in 5th and there is a little in 6th.
-Very noticeable in the first 4 gears

Please have a listen and let me know if this gear noise normal.

Thanks!

Does it whine only when in motion or when standing still too?

Just when accelerating lightly or full throttle.

Ok. Different issue than what I was thinking. I'd say bring it in and let them figure it. Car is under warranty right..

Yes it is

I talked to an Infiniti Service Advisor who talked to a tech and he said some gear noise in 1-3 is normal.

I picked up 3 bottles of Nissan's 75w85 and will drain/fill it tomorrow.
(Where is the warm weather when you need it, tomorrow's high is 34 degrees.)

Not like that. I have no whine period in any gears.

Now, for the first 3 years of ownership I had a nasty whine that varied with respect to engine rpm. Drove me nuts. Sounded like a supercharger whine. Eventually I found out about a tsb relating to an updated power steering reservoir. Got mine replaced, no more whine.

I should also mention, I too was fed the line that this whine (above) is normal. We even test drove a few cars on the lot that exhibited the same noise.

I don't normally drive at higher rpm, but do rev it up as high as 6K/6500 sometimes. Since the above repair, I can't say I've hear any whine.

You should update your OP with details about the car including year, mileage, and more details. Is this a new noise, has this noise always been present, does ambient temperature play a role, does it happen when the car is warm/cold, etc...

It doses't get louder, but the frequency increases as engine RPM increases.

Problem Found!!

I had the car up on jack stands putting on the snow tires/rims.
Since it is a new car to me, I wanted to have a good look at everything under the car.

There is a "lower shifter boot" that is designed to keep noise from entering the cabin by the shifter. It is was not properly seated and has about 1/2" gap on the left side.

The gap is there because someone CUT the rubber boot in half.
There is some additional insulation and I think this was added to reduce the tranny noise.

The part will be ordered tomorrow and I suspect the issue is resolved.

Problem resolved

It took a while to get the parts as they needed to come from Japan, but I am happy to report the gear whine is gone.

Here is the issue.
Someone cut the lower and upper shifter boots:

And with new boots installed:

Also, with the new boots in, the road noise is 90% less and the car so much quieter to drive. This was a nice and unexpected side benefit.

I did this 7 years ago and have no idea of the part numbers.
