2011 IPL Automatic Transmission Manual Mode Problem

2011 G37 IPL 104,000 km. Had the car since about 10,000 km.

Drive the car in manual mode 90% of the time. Last night went out for dinner. Placed the shifter in manual mode. As I am accelerating transmission starts to shift up through the gears on its own??? As I accelerate i can see the gear counter going 1-2-3. The shift points are around 3000 rpm. When I try to downshift with the paddle, car beeps and does not downshift. As I slow down though counter goes 3-2-1. All is very smooth but I've lost control in manual mode. Any ideas? Thanks all.

Does it say M on the dashboard?

Yes it does. I see the M indication and can watch the gear counter going up and down on its own.

My '10 X coupe with the self-installed OE paddle shifter kit started doing exactly that sporadically for the last two months before I totaled it. I intended to do a transmission fluid exchange, but really I suspected intermittent failure of a shift solenoid. Guess I'll never know. No hard codes up to that point.

No check engine light or AT light has ever come on Everything seems normal with the exception of manual mode not working properly.

I have tried using the paddles only without any luck (thinking the problem might be with the shift lever). I've tried using the shift lever only for shifting in manual mode and also no luck. Eventually it starts to shift on its own while remaining in manual mode as indicated on the dash.

I'm starting to look through the service manual AT section. Somewhat complex, especially given that the very technical sections are written in Japanese English. What's frustrating is that most of the troubleshooting is based on these DTC codes and I have yet to see any trouble lights on my dash. I'm assuming if a DTC code is generated a trouble indication is shown on the dash. Is it possible to have a DTC code and no trouble light will come on?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated. The car does not feel the same driving around in D mode

Try doing an ecu reset? Idk if that'll work but worth a try.

Ok some more observations. Driving back on the highway from work and having left the car in Drive Mode from the start, had no problems putting down big power all the way up to approx. 5500 rpm and beyond. Power output felt strong as usual.

Stopped for dinner. Then got back on the road and started testing Manual Mode. Problem appeared right away. Switched back to Drive Mode and then decided to see if full power is available. Sure enough the car is in some kind of limp mode. At full throttle the rpms only rise to max of about 4000. DS Mode does the same thing as well.

Will try a ECU reset as some have suggested next.

I remember one time I was stuck in I guess you would call limp mode. First and only time it happened. It was within the month I had bought the car. My engine was running but I had no control over the electronics. Couldn't shut my car off neither with a press of a button. I looked onto here with no help but eventually found a fix searching through Google.

I performed an alternate ecu reset by disconnecting the MAF sensors and the battery.

So on my way to work this morning limp mode was on. The car sat all day and after work I tried an ECU reset using the gas pedal method. Followed the procedure very carefully but couldn't get it to work. Tried it 10 times no luck. Drove off to have dinner and full power was restored. Kept the car in D mode only.
Stopped for about 1 hour to grab a bite. Got back in the car and figured ill try the ECU reset again. After 3 tries gave up and started the car. Wouldn't you know it the Service Engine Soon light came on!!!
Now the engine has full power and manual mode works again
The bad news, the engine sounds like crap. It's a little rough off the line, up to about 2000 rpm. I can hear knock / ping as I accelerate from about 2000 to 3000 rpm.
Time to invest in a code reader!

Very interesting. At least you have a lead now. If the engine is rough and making funny noises, it many be harmful to continue driving it. I am curious as to what the code is. . .

Might be time to check your oil if you haven't checked it lately.

Ended up buying the ScanTool OBDLink LX tool from amazon. It's on its way. Also planning on buying the Torque Pro App for android. Well see what this Service Engine Soon light is all about.

BTW has anyone been able to read A/T temperature readings with this scan tool and torque app?

Got the scan tool. No problems getting everything setup via Bluetooth. Code read: P0197 Engine Oil Temperature Sensor Low.
To be honest was expecting the dreaded codes associated with the rear timing chain cover gasket failure. No such bad luck perhaps.
Surprised this P0197 code put the engine in limp mode.
Also realized I still should have Powertrain warranty 6 yrs or 110,000 km. I had it in my head that all warranties are were done at 100,000 km. Will visit the dealer on Monday. I will probably insist on having the oil pressure checked at my expense just to be sure, as my warrant is almost over.
