Piston broke inside engine

Hey guys!

So basically I was driving back home from work and on the freeway my car went out. I was driving at around 65mph and at one point I wanted to change lanes since the driver in front of me was slowing down, meanwhile a car was approaching quickly on the next lane. So I put my car into sport and I change lanes and pressed the gas. I reached about 6500 rpm and then all this smoke started coming out from under my car and my engine was making a weird noise. I immediately pulled to the shoulder of the freeway and noticed A lot of oil leaking and there was a whole at the bottom. I took my car to infinti dealer to check out what the problem is. My 2008 g37s has 70k miles so it is out of infinti warranty but I have a 3rd party warranty. Infinti told me it is because of oil neglect/deprivation. Funny thing is they already submitted that statement to the 3rd party warranty without talking to me first. A week before this incident I checked my oil levels and it was perfect. I've change the oil all the time myself. Shouldn't the car warn me if there is a low amount of oil, or is there a shut down mechanism if the car feels it's not getting enough oil? When I drive my car I push it, I've pushed my car much worse the day before and nothing happened, why is it that once the speed picked up then the engine Gave out, could it really be oil deprivation? The 3rd party warranty wants receipts and I didn't keep any of the receipts when I did the oil changes myself. I paid all cash so I don't even have store receipts of purchasing oil. Dealer is charging me 12k for a new engine. Does this seem right? Could it really be oil deprivation?

Thanks

I don't know if its oil deprivation but sure as hell I wouldn't pay 12k for new engine! if you shop around you can likely find one with install for less then half as much and get 24-36k mile warranty with it.

I had once 2004 lincoln ls v8, I needed engine swap, new engine with install was $2.3k. Job took 2 days, engine had 48k miles on it, and I got 24k miles warranty with it.

If you checked oil not that long ago and it was perfect than it's clearly not oil deprivation. They are trying to say it's your fault by saying "oil deprivation" but clearly there's something else at fault here. When you say there was a hole in the bottom, do you mean in the oil pan? Also low oil light is nearly useless, if you see it - it's already too late.

Sorry to hear what happened

No oil will destroy an engine pretty rapidly.

3rd party warranties are a waste of $$$ in my opinion

Never pay cash for anything!

Is it possible you forgot to tighten the drain plug and it fell out?

My local Infiniti dealer was charging a customer $12k to replace an engine because the customer never changed oil in over 30k miles, They showed me what the sludge in the engine looked like and it wasn't pretty so I guess that is about the going rate dealers charge to replace an engine,

Yep, those warranties are usually trash, they look for any loophole or fine print to get out of paying anything major. They might pay for something like a water pump or radiator but rarely will pay out for anything serious.

There's been a couple guys on site recently that have replaced their motors, were able to find motors in the $2k range. Surely worth looking into and if you can find a trustworthy independent shop to do the swap that should save a bundle. And you might be able to offset some of the cost selling parts off your old motor
G/L and sorry you're having to go through this.
