7AT speed & gear "sweet spot"?
Hey guys so I'm trying to figure out the optimum speed to be driving and what gear it'll pull the hardest.
For an example I have a 08 TL with a 5 speed auto.
I've driven that car enough to know that when your traveling 20mph and floor it, the car will downshift to 1st and immediately put you in vtec (4800 rpm, red line is 6700).
Or you can put it in manual mode and downshift to 1st going 20mph. Same thing
Driving 50 mph and flooring it will drop the car into 2nd gear and directly into vtec also.
80 mph and flooring it also does the same.
I'm trying to figure out what the same optimal speed and gears are for my 2011 g37.
It's got 7 gears and when I simply floor it, it feels like the car can still down shift another gear to pull harder but it doesn't. That's why I'm trying to find the sweet spot so I can use the paddle shifters and manually do it myself

The G likes to rev high for the power band and redlines at 7500. Drive and test with the paddles. It won't take long before you find out where on the tach your G comes alive. Maybe even reset the ECU as well to let it relearn driving habits (don't know if that actually works). But seriously, getting it into DS and seeing where it down shifts through the gears and what gives you the pull is part of the fun of exploring your G. It's the best waste of premium gas

well the 7at tranny is a POS, have you had the upgraded flash to your tranny done by the dealership yet? IMO its helps some with the lag and jerkiness, but I honestly drive mine in either DS mode or manual 99% of the time.....if im on the highway or really need to get over in a hurry I always drop it down manually for a quicker response. As mesntioned above...I also feel like 4500 rpm range is where it really starts to pull and then continues through redline

I love high revving NA motors

Well I have a 7spd( doesn't suck) LOL, I have a tune and mine starts pulling at 3100 RPMs and pulls all the way to 7800. Really any gear(1-5) for me over 3100 RPMs. BTW never been in 7th :/ not sure why it there. I drive paddles 100% on the time and only shift to 6th

I've found the 7AT to be actually really good going up through the gears, nice clean quick shifts at the right time. Under sport mode it keeps the rpms in a good range. It takes some getting used to and the downshifting, especially in slow deceleration situations is the place it stumbles. At least that's been my experience. VQ really shines starting at about 3800 rpm, especially w/ an intake & exhaust.

I have no problems with the 7AT. Shifting in D mode is always nice. My only issue is with shift delay in DS Manual. I installed a grounding kit, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference. But even then, it's mostly shifting from 1st to 2nd that has the most delay and I have to time it at about 6k to have it shift at 7300 at WOT.

Only time it goes sluggish is when your driving granny for a bit then want a quick downshift in D. Not going to happen. DS seems to wake the trans up a lot. Manual shifts are really quick now that I installed the grounding kit. Id recommend that to everyone.

If I have time today, I'm going to drive down to Stillen and pick up their grounding kit - had a similar one on my M and it worked pretty good. I gotta transfer my Uprev license from the M to the G as well.
Great forum BTW, a lot of input and tech info...I've been doing a lot of reading these past days....
Thanks guys!!

I agree!! I'm new to the G37 (just picked up a 2012 G37X Sedan yesterday) I've had my 06 M35 sport for a few years and the 'drive' is so different between the two. I'm loving the 7spd and have already started to mod it

It starts feeling alive around 3k and at 5k is the sweet spot. After installing the Stillen Gen3 CAI I noticed that the engine pulls hard all the way to to redline at 7.6k.

My car stays in sport mode.and I use the shifter rather then paddles.question? Will I lose my flash tranny update if I disconnect my battery? Since my intake install.I feel I lost the update a bit.feels different. Maybe intake made me lose bottom.r2c intake by the way.highway and manual mode are fine auto is where it lacks bottom
