Made a mistake letting Walmart change my oil.

I had Walmart change my oil last December because I had recently been in the hospital and unable to do myself. As a result spent about an extra half hour trying to get the oil filter off. I have always changed my own oil and have always been able get the filter off by hand. Lesson learned. Also, they get you in and out so fast, I am sure they don't let all the oil drain out of the pan (I let mine sit for an half hour flat and half hour tilted to one side with jack. Second, I always fill the new oil filter with oil prior to installation so the pump isn't filling the oil filter instead of oiling the bearings. My two cents.

Doesn't prefilling a horizontal filter make a huge mess?

I fill it just enough to soak into the filter paper.

It's not like the G has a huge 3/4 quart oil filter. It fills quickly. The problem with a place like that is that you're getting minimum wage employees that probably don't care about your car. I hate having someone else change the oil simply because I've seen too many stripped and over tightened drain plugs. I understand about physical issues keeping you from changing your own oil. I hope there's no damage done.

I've hand tightened every oil filter I've ever done. I've never been able to take one off by hand after the thousands of miles it was on.

That is not necessary. Just put a film of oil on the oil filter seal with your finger. The oil filter should be hand tight plus another 1/8 of a turn for a proper seal.

The wife was throwing out a plastic shower curtain which is perfect for catching any oil spills on a concrete driveway

I always torque my filters to the specified 13ft-lbs, and I am never able to unscrew them by hand only.
