Tune up?

I went to get a oil change then last week and was told I needed a tune up. I was ok with it and told em to go ahead and do it until they told me it's 500$. I'm wondering what does a tune up consist of? Can I do it by myself or will it be better to pay a mechanic to do it?

The package varies depending on your mileage. You can match up your mileage at this link and see whats due:

Yes, you can do it all yourself, probably for about 1/4 of what they charge, a mechanic would probably come out to about 1/2. If you are going to have them do it, make sure they aren't sneaking in any services you don't need, or missing any you do need.

Ask them to tell you exactly everything they are going to do for $500 and why you need it. Report back and members will be able to tell you what needs to be done and what you can skip.

From: Framingham Ma,
How man miles ? I changed my own plugs at 60k took me 2.5 hours and only that long cause the previous owner stripped a TB bolt so I had to take the intake manifold off , FTL
and like stated $500 for what? TB cleaning and plugs, LOL

I have a 2010 g37x with 67k miles on it. To be honest when I asked why I need the tune up they said they seen the filters are dirty and I asked that's it? And he told me they didn't fully look but when the guy was doing the oil change he seen the filters need to be changed so that also means that a full tune up is needed.

What is needed to do a tune up tho? Spark plugs, filters? Anything else? Any oils or anything?

SMH. Change your oil. Change your air filters. Change your PCV valves. Change your brake fluid and check pads, change them if needed. Change your power steering fluid if you just really feel like it but it's not really needed yet. Same with coolant - you can change it or wait till 100K. Change spark plugs at 100K. I'm not sure about AT or AWD transfer case, some of the X guys can advise you better than I can.

I'd advise strongly against tranny and diff fluid changes - especially at your mileage. The FSM states the fluids are all maintenance free, unless towing/off-roading/etc. There is actually a recent thread where a guy had the dealer change his tranny fluid at a mileage lower than yours (39K), and is now experiencing issues.

So how I am if it makes sense to change em or not? Should i just go with the dealers word? He told me I need to look for signs like if the car is shaking while just sitting at the red light. And before he told me that I never noticed any of that but after he told me it's like I feel this very very very light shaking. Maybe I just think I'm feeling it because of what he said. Is there any way I could open up some stuff and look at the filters and all that?

Take the dealers word on the air filers being dirty? Pull them out and take a peek. If your at 60k+ and haven't changed them in a while, I'd imagine they are pretty dirty. No harm in changing them yourself, it would probably be about $20-$30 if you went with aftermarket filters - probably less. If you want the dealer to do it, tell them to show you the old one's they recommend replacing to ease your mind.

The tiny bit of shake at idle is normal. It is a numbed down version of what the motor mounts don't absorb from the 330hp engine's continuous combustion occurring under your hood.

Oh ok so what else other then Filters should I change? Because honestly the link I was given I cannot understand anything. I bought my car it had 64k on it. I don't know what the previous owner of the car did do or didn't do. How many filters should I change btw?

Change your oil, oil filters and air filters..., if you don't hear any squeaking when u are pressing down on the brakes pedal then your brakes are more than likely fine. Feeling the car do small shakes? That's the beast lying dormant at stops. Ask your dealer it's take on cleaning throttle bodies because I'm pretty sure they need to clean also... Another easy DIY tho.
