I test drove a 2012 G37S sedan and experienced this 5th gear grind, 2 out of the 3 times I put the car into 5th. At first I apologized to the sales guy, till I realized after the second time it wasn't me . I asked him why and he said its because the car has been sitting for a while...which led me to google the issue. I am not new to manual cars, my last car was stick and its not user error here.

Its under warranty with only 40k miles. But what bothers me is that its really inconclusive if the problem has been fixed. All I read about is the trans being replaced numerous times...

So owners, was/is there a updated transmission that fixed this issue? I do not want to dump $30k+ into a car only to have a serious powertrain issue, that will resurface eventually (and more importantly), after warranty.

Thanks in advance.
You lookin to upgrade too huh? I'm nauticapinoy from tsxclub.

Guys who've had transmissions replaced, how long does it usually take them?

I took mine in on a Tuesday and had it back by the following Tuesday.

They also replaced the throwout bearing and the clutch slave cylinder. Said my clutch was in excellent condition (35k miles).

Post op: It shifts much smoother than the previous gearbox, regardless of gear and the clutch seems to work better as well but that could easily be placebo.

If there's any question and your MT car is under warranty, take it in.

Trust me you won't want to pay for this repair out of warranty.

^I was surprised that they replaced my tranny. The only time that I had any gear grind going into 5th was when it was cold. Once the oil warmed up, it shifted smoothly. The dealer told me to leave it with him and he would have one of is techs check it out in the morning. They did and confirmed my findings. So now with a new tranny, It's like having a brand new car.

I'm experiencing this now, car is at 12x xxx KM...
09 6mt will bring it to my mechanic and see what takes place. Will the delearship still replace it for free? I think I still have powertrain warranty left on this car.

It's definitely the syncro. I had the same problem a few years back and pinpointed it out, then took it to the dealership. Had a hard time trying to tell the dense a$$ mechanic AND master mechanic that all i needed was a new trans, or syncro if they wanted to dive that deep. A$$hat replaced it AND the clutch and flywheel, talking bout it was "standard troubleshooting procedure".

Either way, you're going to want to replace it. The sooner, the better.

I've been experiencing the 5th gear grind for a couple of years now. Didn't think it was a big deal, but today while driving I think the tranny finally went. I lost 6th gear, but still had 5th. After getting off the freeway I tested out the other gears. I had 3rd, 4th, and 5th. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear were just spinning like neutral, and neutral stalled out like it was in gear. After driving some more, the problem seemed to fix itself for a bit, but shortly came back. It seems like depending on how I'm driving the gears will shift in and out of place. If it goes out of place, I can kind of get back on track by moving the shifter through the different gear positions. Am I for sure looking at a tranny replacement? Can someone explain what's going on inside the transmission?

So I can't explain it but I had that happen in my 944 a long time ago. On that car at least it was the shift linkage that had gone causing me to lose some gears completely but still have a few. I was 17 I think and had no idea what was happening, made it half way across town before I had to call a tow because I lost everything. My mechanic who is a local independent was able to fix it relatively cheaply and it held up just about forever. I think I took it back in once for that same issue.

Also this thread is making me want to check what the timeframe for transmission warranty on my car is. Doubt I'm still in it since mine's a 2011 but I kind of hope if this issue is going to happen it comes up and I can get it replaced under warranty. Just hit 42k miles I think.
