Alternator making a loud noise

Hey guys,
my alternator started making a loud whirring sound and it started to scare me a little cause it got louder when I sped up. Took the car to Infiniti the same day, dropped it off, and they told me it needed to be replaced. I said okay, and he quoted me $514 for the alternator, and $280 for labor. That's out of reach for me right now, so i'm looking for an alternative. I called a local pepboys and they quoted me $160 to do the labor. I was looking online for some alternators that are compatible and I would like to run it buy you guys to see if this is a good route to take. Here are some links I've found and they range around $90-$150.

2008-2009 Infiniti G37 Alternator - Pure Energy 11340 - - PartsGeek.com

2008 Infiniti G37 - Alternator & Voltage Regulator Parts -BBB INDUSTRIES-2008,REMY- Discountautoparts.com

Any suggestions or tips on what I could do would be great, thanks.

For my take - you don't want to pay for (or perform) this work more than once, so don't cheap out on the part. Low price is good, but watch quality. That said, REMY has a good rep, and $150 or less is a good price.
Always good to check Rock Auto too, but they are a touch higher than your prices this time.

The one I found on amazon is the one I'm most likely going to get.
If anyone knows of any that are around the same price that are recommended that would be great.

Did the dealer actually tell you what was failing on the alternator? Theres only about three or four components that typically fail:
  • Bearings
  • Diode Trio
  • Regulator
  • Brushes

Any of these can be repaired in your garage for less than $100

Exactly, and the noise you describe is classic bearing failure.

There are shops that will rebuild your alternator for you, but replacing bearings is not hard assuming you can do basic wrenching.

Replacement bearings can be found at industrial supply outlets; the model #(s) you need can be found on the sides of the ones you are replacing, although one of those aforementioned shops might have a reference you can consult.

Good luck!
