Service Engine Soon light just came on - what is the dealer likely to say?
My G37 sedan just turned 3 years old in May with 37,000. Out of the blue, the Service Engine Soon light came on. The car seems fine but I will take it in anyway since it's time for an oil change.
What are some of the more probable reasons this light would come on? I basically trust this Infiniti dealership but it would be nice to hear from others who have experienced this.

could be as simple as a loose or bad gas cap. No one will be able to tell you unless you get the code. If you have an autoparts store (autozone down here) they'll usually read the code for you for free. Sounds like you're under warranty though so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

It came on because some emissions component is operating outside of spec. As above, only the code will tell you what ails it Even with the code, the actual cause of the problem may be something completely unrelated.
If the curiosity is killing you, autozone, advanced auto, pimpleboys, etc, all read codes for free. This is not to be confused with interpreting what the actual problem might be. Some are pretty obvious, like the gas cap example. Other involve diagnosis. The dealer should have all the right equipment to troubleshoot this.

Doesnt Service Engine Soon just means he is close to a pre programmed service interval?
Check Engine is what you guys are reffering to as far as checking codes.
Check the owners manual and see what is "due" at 37k. Its probably just oil.
EDIT: See Page 21.

Your check engine light has to do with a problem.
The ecu is letting you know to bring the car in for repair, has nothing to do with the fact you need an oil change.
As others have mentioned, without a specific code your never going to figure it out.
If you can't wait to get to the dealership, try autozone.
Please do not attempt any fixes, that's why you have a warranty.

Two completely different functions.
He is at 37000 miles and there is a preset maint at 37500 miles as per the maint schedule I posted.
Dont freak this guy out thinking his car is broke.

The service soon light is the check engine light (aka mil - malfunction indicator light).
Doesn't anyone read their owner's manual anymore???
Perhaps rather than us guessing, the OP posts a picture so there's no question what light or message is truly is in question. Based on his description, I agree with Risky Guy, this has nothing to do with an oil change.

interesting because mine is on too and mine is close to a service interval as well.
Any car I have owned, check engine light means issue, service engine soon light means it hit a service interval and needed to be reset.
I am stumped as I have not touched my gas in well over a week and my light came on yesterday or the day before.
Guess ill tighten my cap. lol

Service engine on dashboard is completely different.
Most people don't know one from the other.
Since most cars have tripped ses light, op did not really explain.
Sorry if it seems harsh, I have seen people drive cars with flashing tpms for years.

Is this for real, or performance art? I swear I can't tell sometimes on this forum.

And how the heck did you even find it?
