Engine sounds harsh during first 5-10 seconds
Guys: 2012 G37
Engine sounds harsh for 5-10 seconds when started cold. Does not knock or tick, just sounds rough. Car has 12K miles and has sounded like this since new.
I just assumed the valve timing system was getting up to speed and was nothing to worry about, but am beginning to wonder.
Anyone else notice the same roughness/harshness?

I have a 2013 with about 700 miles and noticed this too - sounded to me more like an exhaust leak underneath the car near the cats but it it stopped after the car ran for about 20 seconds. Sounds like the same issue but I am going to ask the dealer when I go in for the first oil change.

Mine has a kind of growl and sounds like its ready for the track. Sound goes away after about 1 minute.

I sympathize with you, jrcowboys. Started a thread last Fall with identical concerns. Apparently, it's normal for this engine.

The 335i does it as well, the one I test drove I made the salesman come out and listen to it because it sounded awful on start up. It's all these emissions initiatives. I don't mind it on this car because it makes it sound like a sports car on start up.
My Tundra on the other hand had these things called AIP (Air induction pumps), it was a $2k system that routinely fails around 60-100k miles and all it does is blow air into the cats for 1 minute during start-up for emissions purposes. It didn't sound like an angry nest of bees like the G does, but I'm much happier with this method than the Tundras. It was such a problem Toyota actually had to extend the warranty on it to 100k miles.

when i took my car to the dealer for a transmission sw flash i asked them to look at it and they said there was no exhaust leak so thats normal i guess...

Tks guys for the answer, cuz I was going to bring that up to the dealer tomorrow when I was going to do my oil change lol
