Block Heater

So I woke up today to -37c (-34.6 F) and starting the car was painless but the sound she made worried me a bit, it was idling at about 1100 but making a real bad noise like its straining.

I've been reading that the Canadian versions of the car come with a block heater, I even see mention of it in the manual, but absolutely no information where it actually is under the hood.

Anybody use the block heater and can point me which nook or cranny its hidden in under the hood?

Look in the front bumper opening under the lic plate. It should be there, coiled and tied up.
Where in Ontario is is -37c (without wind chill)?

I don't have the car atm, I'll look when my wife comes home for lunch.

You mean where to toe hook is in the lower grill area?

I live up in Huntsville, Ontario.

all canadian g's have a block heater from the dealer. if i was you, i would be plugging it in whenever the temp drops below -20 overnight. actually, i'd probably plug in before that. but living in Vancity those temps are not a reality so it's not a concern.

Yeap it's where the toe hook is on the front lower grill. You probably just have it tucked in there.

So I looked inside the compartment that has the tow hook attachment. There was nothing else in there, especially no wound up cables? Any clues? Can you guys actually verify you have this yourself?

It's a Canadian model bought from the dealer..

Should be running synthetic oil in those temps too. Won't thicken up like regular oil does in such temps.

ok, I'm guessing you guys have never used it before, or just playing around with me?

I found it today after calling a dealership, them telling me its near the battery, then near the passenger side light.

After calling a second one, he was able to tell me exactly where it is. Right behind the engine intake filter, along the tube leading back to the engine, on the Driver's Side.

As I mentioned in #2 - Mine was here. I bought it, new from dealership, in 2007.


If its not there, or tucked under the hood behind a headlight then give the dealer a call.
Pg 5-57 of the 2011 Owners Manual suggests that all Canadian models have an Engine Block Heater. Unfortunately that manual doesn't indicate where it is on various model G's.

You're driving the early model G37. Well at least there are both models mentioned here now.

Either way, this will be a good reference for people to use in the future.

No, I'm driving a 2011 G37S 6MT. I used to drive a 2007 G35x.
