Transmission problem

I have a 2009 sedan and have had considerable trouble with the automatic transmission. The problem seems to be tied to 4th gear. When the transmission needs to downshift to 4th, it is sometimes reluctant to do so, stays in 5th gear too long, finally downshifts to 3rd gear and rpm jumps too high. The transmission then hunts for the right gear. This problem sometimes knocks the car in to safe mode. I brought it to Infiniti at 50k miles, only to be told they could find nothing wrong. I brought it to a different dealer at 68k miles and they flashed a new engine control program and I will say the transmission shifting was smoother for a while. Then it did it 3 more times, each time knocking the car in to safe mode, and I returned it to the second dealer. They took it for a test ride, confirmed the problem (it went in to safe mode on them) and said I probably need a new transmission but since the car now has 72k miles on it, the new transmission is on me. Needless to say, I'm in touch with the Attorney General. In the mean time, I have spoken with a transmission expert who tells me it is unlikely I need an entire transmission. He suggested replacing the 2/4 shift solenoid as a start.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with their transmission and how did you correct the problem?

Thanks in advance,

Steve Brown

Hate to say it, as far I know the solenoid is inside the trans.
Very expensive on labor to open it up. Last I knew the unit is a disposable piece meaning non repairable. I mean you could have work done its gonna be ridiculous.
My auto had 52k on it when it started to slip bang mid shift etc.
I personally got rid of mine when the trans started to act up.
Tranny for this car is obscene, I ended up buying a new car rather than even try to fix.
My car was also hit 2x, good luck with the repair.
If you do any work on the trans itself I'd go with a transgo kit.
Again good luck.

You reported the problem well before the warranty ran out. It's well documented. It's just that the techs couldn't reproduce the symptoms. That's not your fault, and they should cover the new trans. It's interesting that they finally told you that you need a new trans just after the warranty ran out...
How typical of the thieves.
Good luck.

p.s. If Infiniti can't make a reliable trans then I'm going with Lexus. No brand loyalty here.

Dont bother with the attorney general. Call infinity consumer affairs and open a case. Don't bother with their online forum - it will take them forever to get back to you. Call and talk to someone.

If your close to warranty expiring, they usually do make a good faith attempt at honoring warranty.
Back in the day, I had a 96 j 30t with 62k on the odo.
Trans went bad & Infiniti replaced for free.
Try another dealership before you drop the $.
Ask any of your friends. I'd even try bribe the service manager.
I didn't realize you we're just out of warranty.
That's just my .02, hopefully you get your car fixed for a fair price.

THIS! I called them to complain about my wheel bearings going bad at 78k miles on my '04G and they gave me an Infiniti credit for the cost of the repair. It can't hurt to ask.

Bad shifter module.
Had to have the entire shifter replaced under warranty.
