K&N Filter and MAF

Couldn't find another thread about this and was wondering if anyone else has had the same issue.

I installed the K&N High-Flow Air Filters about 4-5k miles ago. Last month one of my MAF went bad, causing the car to go into limp mode. It was replaced and code was cleared. But now, 28 days later, the other MAF goes bad. It just seemed too much of a coincidence for them both to go out close to each other. One thing to note though, I did happen give a little extra gas both times :P 6k rpm range... However limp mode happened ~15 minutes later. Any thoughts? Should I just chuck the filters and go paper??

Edit: Inside info, I'm coming up with this theory because the K&N filter is oiled.

did you clean them and put too much oil on them?

Nope, hadn't touched them since I put them in pre-oiled

Sounds like a coincidence, I have K&N filters on my car and haven't had any issues.

There is a series of 4 videos concerning this topic on K&N & MAF failures, etc. Of course it was put out by the K&N company, but worth a watch.

My old GTI would lose a Maf once a year due to these filters. I would stay away from K&N and just buy a dry filter and replace when needed.

Maybe it was your Volkswagen, they are extremely unreliable. I had a MKV. Drove nice, but it was a headache.

the k&n filters come SOAKED in oil....which is a big nono for the MAF sensors....i recently bought K&N filters to replace my HKS dry filters, and after having them in for approximately 3 months, i took them out to double check everything and i literally found a puddle of filter oil sitting at the bottom of my intake box.....it's not unheard of that Nissan MAF sensors blow after high(er) flow intakes...this was a super common problem in the Altima community......majority of them just stuck their oe filter back in and brought it in for warranty.....but i guess if you're out of warranty, that's a different story

For the G owners with the typhoon system do you feel any difference in power or response?

My but dyno thinks there is.

Honestly, there's probably a little gain, but who knows for sure. According to the dyno sheet that was included with the exhaust provided by K&N, it was tested on a 370Z and had a gain of 12hp.

Meh...I just like the way it makes the exhaust sound.

I'm thinking of putting on the typhoon intake, but I live in CA and the city where I live they always have cops looking for illegally tuned cars... wondering if it's worth the risk
