Car now has ~7500 miles. The whine was first noticed at about 1K miles (give or take). Last week changed out the trans fluid to redline MT-85. During the initial test drive, there was no noticeable change. Ambient temp ~80F, and whined like a SOB.

After a few days and more driving (~100 miles now), the volume of the whine is greatly reduced (mid/upper 70'sF). I can still hear it with the stereo off and windows closed, but it's nowhere as loud and annoying as it was before. We'll see if this change persists with more miles and hotter temps.

Jury still out on shifting quality. Thus far I can't tell much difference between this and stock.

Total cost was ~$110, $60 for the fluid (4 qts) and $50 for the fluid transfer pump.

Issue fully resolved! Was not related to engine or trans at all, but rather the power steering reservoir.
