Finally installed my Z1 aluminum driveshaft!

As the title states! Received it from Z1 over a month ago and just hadn't found the time to get it installed. Well all that changed this weekend!

Install was super easy. I have a true-dual Greddy exhaust and all I had to do was unbolt the driver-side pipe from the cat (2 bolts) and remove the exhaust shroud (4 bolts) and two driveshaft shrouds (6 bolts). Then just unbolt the center clamp (2 bolts) which connects the two driveshaft pieces to each other (stock shaft is two-piece, Z1 is one piece!), and lastly unbolt the driveshaft from the rear (4 bolts) and it slid right out! All-in-all it didn't take more than 45 minutes. Super easy!

Installing the Z1 was even easier! Slide it in, bolt it up, and replace all the shrouds and bolts, 15 minutes tops. I was in and out in an hour and a half. Granted this was all done with the convenience of a lift I can imagine it would be a little annoying and somewhat scary with a jack.

As far as a difference in performance........You'll have to wait until tomorrow lol! I have only driven about a half mile so far, and didn't get on it much. I have a 90 mile drive tomorrow, though, so you will DEFINITELY have my impressions tomorrow evening!

What I can say was a pleasant surprise is it doesn't seem to make any noise, which I admit I was somewhat worried about. Construction was fantastic and the fit was spot on. Only thing I did was to grind down one of the welds and then paint the shaft matte black.

Alright guys...I'll be back tomorrow!

I called Z1 (Mike?) about the availability for this aluminum shaft for an auto Coupe. After hearing my build he highly recommended to wait for the carbon shaft they will be also making in the near future.

Regardless, I'm interested in your trials. Thanks for the post.

Realistically, how much drive line losses is one mitigating with an Al or cf drive shaft? I have no idea...

Back for the first time! lol SORRY for the long wait! Been super busy.

Sooooo long story short, and keep in mind I have no dyno's from before or after, so this is all seat of the pants impression...I feel a slight difference.

Is it the 30rwhp that the infamous thread from 6MT purported that the drive shaft gained on a G35? HELL NO. Definitely not. I feel like there is a bit more pull, especially in the mid-to-uppder RPM range. This seems to be most noticeable in 4th, 5th, and 6th gears. It seems like my highway passing ability is somewhat improved...but the difference is MINOR!

I would love to get some hard evidence, i.e. dyno's, but not sure if that will be happening in the near future. I wouldn't advise anyone against getting the drive shaft, if your heart is set on it, but I would definitely warn you that if you are expecting a 30rwhp you will be sorely disappointed.

Anyways, if anyone has any specific questions about the performance or install, ask away!
