Oil Cooler Q's

Coming from a 370Z - - -- -

One of the biggest issues with the 370Z is how the oil temps spike under spirited or track driving. 220* plus was normal for me but when I got into the gas for any amount of time the temp would easily creep up to 240*.

For 2012 Nissan ordered factory oil coolers for all new model Z's. It is a water-to-air cooler and recent reports seem to say that it only provides enough cooling for backroad driving and not track use.

My questions -

Have oil temps been an issue for the G's?
Did 2012 G's also get an oil cooler like the Z?

Yes, oil temps also affect g37s in the exact same manner as z's. As far as I know only the z's get the oil cooler, but I never researched this as I already bought my G(lol). I've never experienced full on limp mode , as I've never tracked my car. But you can notice it to lay down a bit in the middle of summer, it probably has milder limp mode w/ reduced timing etc.
I'm not a big fan of the aircooled oil cooler because I live in a state w/ real winters and don't want to wait around for oil temps to get to operating temp, and I do alot of late night freeway driving and always see debris that would cause a catastrophic oil leak if hit it w/ bar and plate oil cooler
Good news for us , specialty z is putting together a retrofit kit using the oil to water cooler the 2012 370s use. I did alot of research on my370z , it does prevent limp mode on tracked z's, but is not as effective as an air cooled front mount.

^Wow, thanks, it never occurred to me that that could be an issue with air cooled oil coolers.

What's the problem?

There really isn't any big issue with air cooled oil coolers. The chance of damage from road debris is no greater than the damage you might get from a normal water or A/C radiator. Now for the oil getting warm in winters you should be using an adaptor which has a thermostat in it to only let oil get to the cooler when it reaches the proper temperature. This should help out that problem. If it still gets too cold, then cover the front of the cooler with metal plate or even duct tape to reduce the amount of cold air passing through it. Tricks that racer's use to keep their oil temp up on cold race days. If it's really that cold, then disconnect the adapter plate and put the stock filter back on until it's warmer outside.

Your car will go into limp mode very quickly. I got an aftermarket 24fin oil cooler and that kept me going on a 90+ degree track day, but then the water temperature went up and the car went on limp mode anyway.
