g37 revs limited?

whenever i rev my g37 engine, it will only go up 5,000 rpms? is this normal and is there a way to un_limit the rpms so that it will go higher? seems kinda pointless to limit such a powerful machine

Sorry for the question but is your car in DS? have you tried switching to Manual? It should rev all the way to 7500

When the car is not moving, the rev is limited to 5000 rpm.

It revs all the way to redline while under load. It doesn't rev over about 5K while not under load to keep dummies from redlining an engine with no load on it.

Very well put

High RPM with no load is ALOT different then the same RPM under driving conditions. I always cringe at DUMMIES sitting there free reving the s*** out of a motor to show off exhaust etc. Good way to spin a bearing..

What practical functionality would be gained by having this ability?

^ burn outs yo!

but I digress. Unless you are tuned to remove the limit, you will also hit the rev limiter on a dyno no?

LOL.. What's the OP have in mind, redline the car, then do a neutral drop? Thus they limit it to 5Krpm under free revving conditions.

I used to ride with a bunch of people that would sit there and rev (at times to some very high rpms) their bikes at a stop light. Very annoying especially when they're running nearly straight pipes. Many times I wished they'd through a rod or spin a bearing doing this. Learn the lesson the hard way.

Edit. On the dyno, the engine is not free revving, the dyno roller is providing resistance to the drive wheels.

I see your point on the not moving. But would you need to go over 7500 RPM on the dyno for more power, not the 5K limit standing still. This would be on a 7AT dyno , not sure if would be the same for 6spd.

When you dyno a vehicle, you run from a low rpm (2-3K depending on the operator) up through redline. Some operators will stop accelerating just before redline, others bump off the rev limiter.

Pic below is from my bike, which hit the rev limiter at 11.5Krpm... Not bad for a little 1L engine

Cereal2K - are you understanding that the 5k limit is ONLY when in neutral and NOT when in drive? Last few posts you sound confused?

I got that. However we are not limited at redline 7500 RPMs while under load also?

I thought fuel cut occurs around 7800rpm, that's the actual limiter.

btw I heard a sport bike free rev to the limiter the other day, made me cringe...
