Leaking differential
Need some help folks - I just installed the Fast intentions X pipe exhaust which sounds great btw at 13k miles. While crawling under the car I noticed that some gear oli was leaking where the rear drive shaft meets the transfer case. It is not a drip but clearly a leak. I am heading to the dealer who said it shouldn't be leaking but wanted to check with you guys first.

Sounds like a seal has gone bad in your transfer case.
Btw, a differential != transfer case. The differential distributes force to the l/r wheels, while a transfer case distributes to the front/rear differentials. I would think the seals should last longer than 13K miles, but if they were improperly installed, or damaged, leaks can occur.

It looks like the unit is sealed since you have to unbolt the driveshaft in order to remove the unit. If they do that I may have them install the Berk HFC since they are there....What do you think they will say? I know the differentials need the fluid replaced just like my other awd vehicles.

The t-case has seals in it but its not a "sealed" unit in the sense that there aren't serviceable parts inside. If the dealership is good they won't even need to pull the t-case out of the car. Just need to drop the prop shaft, pull the drive flange, and pull the broken seal. It's a big DYI job but dealerships, or any good mechanic for that matter, have the correct tools.

Seals can leak for a number of reasons.
* improper installation (seal is crooked or cocked)
* seal is defective
* damage during installation
* somehow dirt of debris got in there and ruined the seal (hopefully they'll inspect the shafts that spin within and make sure there's no rough or gouged surfaces). Typically there's a dust seal present too.

I had the car up on the lift today at my garage for the 3rd Oil change...and noticed a leak on the transfer case with the driveshaft. It's going in tomorrow. I called the stealership today around 3:30 and it took 20 mins to make a f(*&*&%*ing appointment and I even complained on how long it took...I was about to hit the roof and ask for the manager when they reassured me that they would take care of me. Ordered me a courtesy car for tomorrow....I'm upset because if I could have talked to a service advisor they could have ordered the part. Instead...I'm going to waste time bringing in 2xs. Once to diagnose the problem then they will have to order the parts then a second time. The car has only 18K kms or about 11K miles. It's been driven only a total of 10.5 months! I'm actually quite shocked that I have this problem on a 2012 G37xS coupe with such low mileage. Never driven more than 2 hours at a time! No long trips and mostly highway driving as I live in the burbs. No stop and go hardly too. Weird. Anyway there are 3 years left on the bumper to bumper warranty.

Ok so I brought the car in yesterday to my Infiniti Stealership and they said that the leak is in fact not a leak of the transfer case or the rear differential, and that it's just excess grease from the drive shaft that end up on the transfer case. They cleaned it and asked me to return in 500 kms for another inspection to make sure that it is in fact that. It sounds like they are right because the color of the liquid is black whereas they told me that the fluids used in the transfer case are red in color....I will keep everyone posted.

I'm actually experiencing the same exact problem on my 09 X w/ 35k and have had the dealer already put in one replacement seal in the transfer case, but it appears to be leaking once again. It's not an real active drip, but enough to run down the case and start staining it over time. Putting your finger in where the seal is recessed shows definite wetness. I'm going to be returning again to see if they can replace the entire transfer case since it keeps taking out seals...
BTW, the first dealer I went to said they didn't see anything leaking and wouldn't replace the seal. At least the second dealer I went to was able to identify the issue and act on it.

I'm getting the run around with this as the dealer now wants to install another seal (2nd one) instead of replacing the entire transfer case. I'm having my doubts the new seal will stop the issue and it will leak once again. I also apparently have a bad catalytic converter as I asked them to diagnose a metallic rattling sound under the driver's side of the car. 37k and a bad cat already, what gives Infiniti?!
