From my personal experience with my 2003 silverado 1500 5.3 Vortec, I see around 2mpg better with 91 premium fuel. Here in South Dakota we have pretty flat, straight roads for testing and usually consistent weather. I'm a believer in premium fuels and i'm sticking to it. Just my opinion. Hand calculated btw

I've noticed that even 2 gas stations selling the same gas such as shell will still give you different mpg. I don't get it. Same driving ways and all.

I don't think you can accurately conduct this test. Too many variables. Really need to maintain identical driving environment/conditions to be able to tell any difference. Also, i bet fuel btu's range from batch to batch, even from the same gas station.

I was recently at a Land Rover, Mini and Jaguar garage and the owner of the garage was talking to a customer and I overheard him say that Valero is the worst gas and Shell is the best.

Of all the gas I've tried Shell feels the best. For me it's not about fuel economy it's how the car performs and you can feel that. Going below the recommended octane and driving hard will cost you big money eventually rendering your modest savings at the pump useless.

shell + octane booster

one thing I dont get is how people say "But shell is sooo expensive!!"

lets say its $0.15 more than the cheapest gas.

We hold what? 12gallons in our tank?

12 * 0.15 = 1.8

You spend less than 2dollars extra for more miles, and a cleaner engine. And to be honest shell is usually only $0.10 more than the cheaper gas. I haven't really seen it $0.15 more.

Go to the air port.. get fuel w/o alcohol in it. There is a reason its prohibited from aviation fuel. (crash n you die).. Alcohol is NOT good in fuel.

It's all politics you want to save dollars in fuel, use biodiesel from soy beans as it has the highest ratio of BTU's to gallon than anything else anyway.. ETOH sucks! (useses less fuel to harvest too)

Since the corn loby stuck us in the *** with government mandated etoh in our fuel, there is not much you can do other than get involved. Alcohol is not cost effective, bio diesel from soy beans is. The issue is politics PERIOD. Ill take a bio biesel at 350 hp 450 torque at 41 mpg over a gass + ETOH at 25 mpg any day.

Alcohol sucks. It has no place in fuel ... There is a reason the FAA does not allow it in aviation fuel. SAFETY. An engine failure in yor car is meaningless to them. It to easily separates with water in the system.

I have both a hot diesel car (and a truckj) and my G37 IPL. .. diesel is better IMHO, but the USA standard kills good disel cars from comming into the US.

Re fuel.. best MPG is with the LEAST octaine needed to not knock. So driving is the biggest part of it.

Run 89 w/o stomping on it will give you the best mpg. A good detergent fuel will be the best as long as you do not use more than 1/2 throttle.

If you want performance use premium, if mpg use the lowest octane possible without knocking at the throttle position you use. But can you tell?

Your ECU can. Drive like grandma 89 is ok, but if you stomp it you will have a problem. Takes $ to make power.
