Exclamation Safe to launch at 3800 RPM??

Various test of the G37 6MT (MotorTrend, CarandDriver, etc) report 5.2sec 0-60 times. They get these numbers by launching the car at 3800 RPM or so. Is this OK to do? I am a new owner (new G37s, not even a week old) and am curious as to the reliability or the car and the durability. Has anyone been launching like this? any problems? what do you recomend for best lanuch and could you please describe how to do it (i.e. do you dump the clutch?)

I wouldn't do anything until the car is broken in according the manufacturers recommendation in the owners manual. That should give you plenty of time to research the question.

while i'm no pro, i found my best launches with my old G35 (at the local drag strip) were from ~2300-2400rpms, and only a very slight feathering of the clutch. at that rpm i did not get too much wheelspin - just a little bit. i had to modulate throttle through 1st and 2nd to avoid axle tramp. 14.3 @ 98 for an '04 6MT sedan at sea level, bone stock.

anything over 2500rpms produced too much wheelspin for me. i suspect the magazines feather the clutch quite a bit more than i was prepared to. they don't have to pay for clutches.

the G37 may be slightly different so you may be able to handle a bit more rpm, but i doubt as an expense-paying owner you'd be up as high as 3800rpm.

Break what?

I have not followed those break in directions at all...

Good point on the clutch, probably burned up after a few launches

A 3800 RPM launch may be ideal for the fastest acceleration, but I'd personally avoid doing that too often. It's definitely hard on the transmission/clutch.

I'd just launch at idle or slightly above and save the higher RPM launches for those times when I need maximum acceleration from the get go.

It's only 1250 miles... perhaps a little self restraint might pay off in the long run.

3800's a bit too high for me as well. i once dropped the clutch at 5k. that really didn't go down so well when and if i launch, i try to keep it between <2500 (just barely). minimum wheel slip (some wheel hop), but then it catches rather quickly.

If you are hard on your car you will pay, if you take it easy on you car you will pay less.....................

There really isn't a safe "launch" just some aren't as hard on your car as others. This is where you need to figure it out. How hard on your car are you willing to be.

2.2k has been fine for me with almost no wheel spin and quick acceleration
