Transmission problems exclusive to 08 models?
Hey Guys,
I've been reading up on the forum for a couple months now, just trying to do research on prospective cars. I noticed that a lot of the transmission problems: grinding, chattering, excess noise, vibration seemed to be reported by people with either '08 models or people who have not revealed which model year they have. Can anyone with an '09 or '10 chime in if they have had transmission issues? I'm hoping that Infiniti tried to address some of these issues for '09 and '10
Thanks a lot for your help!
Edit: I am talking about the 6MT

What transmission are you talking about?
Nothing about the 6mt has changed between the years that anyone knows of. There really shouldn't be any grinding or abnormal vibration on ANY year G, so if you're experiencing that, you should have it looked into. The 6mt is noisy though. On the G and 370z.
08 had the 5AT and 09+ has 7AT.

I've had a lot of problems with my 6MT, but it's not to say that all G37s will have that issue. The reason why you see so many of them pop up on the forums is because that is where people go to say they are having a problem. Nobody makes a thread saying how great their 6MT is shifting lol but yeah, I've had my clutch replaced once, and my transmission replaced once, all under warranty. I'm having issues now, but Infiniti is deciding to wait until they can properly diagnose the problem before further taking my car apart. I'd say you have nothing to worry about, the odds of getting a shoddy transmission are pretty slim. If it is bad, it should still be under warranty.

'08 6mt with 30k mi here. Tranny feels/functions flawlessly after what I would guess is nasty abuse from the previous owner.
It IS very noisy though. The dealer swore up and down that it is all normal noise and offered to let me drive/listen to a new G37... but when he called the front desk, there wasnt a single 6mt in stock.....

Thanks for all for all of the replies guys. I definitely wouldn't mind noise from the clutch or the rest of the transmission unless the noise meant that something was going to break. It seems to me that for the 6MT, if the transmission is problematic and needs replacement, then the replacement doesn't really fix the problems/symptoms permanently.
But like Koa789 mentioned, the threads posted don't mean that there are a lot of 6MT transmission failures in proportion to all of the g37's out there.

I have an '08 with the 5AT, and no problems whatsoever. At first, I thought I had a problem because of how the 5AT engine brakes itself at slower speeds, but after driving 3 different loaner G37's with the 7AT, I've noticed they do the same. Like people have said, you shouldn't have any problems with any G transmissions, but that doesn't mean that a given few won't have problems, either. Ideally, the trannies should be flawless. I'm glad mine is!

I would go out on a limb and claim that greggv's G is an example of the vast majority of G37's. We never read of such success stories because people complain more than anything. Go to any car forum and you will see that apparently every single car out there is full of issues because there's so many people complaining about issues and the ones that are issue-free prefer to stay quiet.
